Ampute partner

Daniel Edmondson, who has been a bilateral amputee for five years, says, “Physical intimacy isn’t any less exciting or enjoyable as an amputee. Part of it is being comfortable in your own skin and trusting that your partner isn’t bothered by it either. The mechanics of sex might change, but that can be easily adapted if your partner is open. Particularly helpful in the adjustment of the adult amputee is the presence of a supportive partner who assumes a flexible approach, takes over functions when needed, cuts back when the amputee is able to manage, but at all times maintains the amputee's self-esteem. Encompass Health's amputee rehabilitation program offers what it takes for patients to progress toward independence. Dross of Sorrow: Chapter One: The Princess of Ash [The Forge of Twilight Tetralogy]

Chapter One: The Princess of Ash
It is through stories and songs that we weave dreams or nightmares, and lend inspiration to heroes and villains alike.” -Jilada Vasoon, Professor of Literature, Dunklestadt University, 1233 PFW
“Caitlyn Corvin ducked under the felinae's slashing claws, a quick swish of her magic blade severing one limb before the assassin's poisoned gauntlet blades could slice into the mason's daughter.” Bellona enthusiastically proclaimed, the teen's mop twisting in her two-handed grip like a greatsword. Gasps and soft cheers came up from the crowd of children in the cloistered schoolyard who were listening intently while going through their assigned chores. Bellona resumed mopping off the chalk drawings that the younger children had made earlier in the day so they would have a fresh canvas after the weekend was over, continuing the tale, stomping with each step.
“Tholos Grane charged through two assassins, knocking them on their asses for their companions to swarm. He pushed onward without looking back, the kenthri picking up the felinae assassin now missing an arm, throwing him through the inn's second-floor window, crashing onto the trough outside with a loud snapping of bone.” Bellona used the mop to fling some water over at a child who had been too distracted with the story to continue picking up the assorted toys left out in the schoolyard. The boy shrieked as the droplets hit his face, not out of shock from how cold it was, but from the joy of being included in the story, playing the role of the thrown assassin and hamming it up. Bellona smirked, mopping the last drawing, glancing up and over at the ivy-covered clock tower whose two nearest faces passed silent judgment on those who dallied on their daily tasks. Two minutes left. The fourteen-year-old resumed,
“Caitlyn sheathed her sword on her back, the vermilion glow on its handle and central channels dulling and fading into black shadows. The mason's daughter, heart pounding heavily, stammered for the words to convey proper gratitude. Caitlyn held her chin, stealing a single kiss, before winking and backing up.” Some of the younger children jeered or made faces at the mushy romance, but Bellona continued, “With a bow and a wave, she turned, rushing to the end of the hall, to the nearest balcony.” Bellona quickly carried her mop and bucket to the entrance of the walled schoolyard, setting them down for the custodian to put away after use, then ran toward the opposite side, grinning as she saw the wee ones growing excited for the frequent ritual ending of her tales.
“Caitlyn ran out of the balcony and across the rooftops of Manngehabt, her compatriots swiftly following behind her as the local guard ran into the entrance of the inn.” She hopped up some of the stonework around the fountain, leaping up onto the top of a hedge whose trimmed top had enough stability to kick off from. She grabbed hold of the lower branches of the elm near the outer wall, spinning and launching herself up to catch the lip of the upper brickwork with one hand, a wrought-iron shaft with the other, a pointed tip a few inches higher from her grip. “Together, our brave heroes ran through the city and away from the scene of battle, leaving things to the corrupt guards to explain to their superiors.” Bellona gripped the iron more firmly, thrusting her other hand up, using her boots against the wall to slowly pull herself higher, until she stood between two metal spears. She gave a bow, much to the applause and cheers of the younger children, and smirks of some a bit older who were not yet jaded. Without another word, she turned, dropping off the wall. As she fell, she caught a branch from a drooping willow, riding it all the way to the ground.
Bellona dusted her dress and bag off, blinking, turning as she heard clapping coming from across the cobblestone street. Runsafel Demuni grinned broadly, covered head to toe in soot and ash, almost baked into his bare broad chest, pants, and apron. The blacksmith's son and apprentice offered an arm, but she smirked, gesturing to her dress and his dirty figure. He chuckled but gave a slight bow.
“You'd make a splendid entertainer, Bell, if only your mother would let you perform on a stage.”
“Well, we all know how difficult it is for the mayor of Dunklestadt to keep her daughter from hurting her public image with her escapades. Maybe once I'm of age to move out, or if she fails to get re-elected, then I can focus on having a life that isn't shaped toward following in her footsteps...” Bellona said with a soft laugh, reaching out, ruffling his hair. She drew out a handkerchief and wiped it clean of his sweat and the soot, as Runsafel hummed, rubbing his chin softly, a glint in his eyes. She rolled her eyes, knowing that expression.
“You know... there is another way you could have your own life, as you see fit to live it.” He said quickly as she walked into the back of his father's shop and through it toward the front exit, bypassing a long walk that would make her a trespasser through less forgiving landowners' residences and shops.
“There are several ways, yes; I could run off and join a circus if I can make my way through the salt road, out of The Ghost Grove and The Twilight Forest, and off to the west, hopefully finding one in Oak Hill or New Hollowstone if I leave right away to catch them before they move on for the season. I could just move out and become a filthy urchin, entertaining for scraps and the risks of being mistaken for one of the ladies of the night that work down by the docks. I could just ignore my mother and her scheduled lessons, disguise myself, and hope none of the different venues recognize me and turn me away. Like they did the last time.” Runsafel moved to intercept her exit from the blacksmith shop, putting both hands up to try to calm her as she huffed at the delay.
“Ooooor... stop denying our mutual attraction. Give me a chance to court you properly, to prove I can provide and protect you-”
“I can protect myself just fine, Run.” She interjected, and he nodded, but didn't stop to re-evaluate her growing irritation.
“Yes, but your mother doesn't believe that and wants someone who has the means to do so.” Bellona laughed at his suggestion, yanking sharply on one of his ears, causing him to wince in pain.
“Means? You think my mother would believe a blacksmith's son is going to provide a stable future for me, especially if she expects me to someday succeed her and let her guide me from the wings. She would want me to marry a wealthy merchant with political influence or a distant duke who could bring new business to Dunklestadt.” She gestured around to the glowing furnace, toward the ashes on the ground around them. “Real wealth and influence, not... Not to be some sort of... Princess of Ash.” Runsafel scowled, crossing his arms. She sighed, expecting him to sulk like this all week, which meant going another route after the weekend was over, at least for a while. He was a dear friend, her best friend actually, but in part because so many others her age were preparing for the same sort of things her mother expected of her, or were extremely vapid and naive. She envied some, who didn't have to memorize so many names and faces, facts and figures about trading partners and other people of influence that interacted with her mother so often.
“We both know that isn't what you truly long for, Bell. You want adventure and excitement, to live as a heroine in one of your stories, romancing as much as you're being charmed in return.” Bellona shivered lightly as she thought on what he said. It wasn't so much that she didn't like him, so much as how much of a dunce he was at times. How many times she had tried to explain, and yet he still didn't grasp what even she struggled to put to words. She enjoyed those stories, but like so many her age, she had conflicted feelings about things like romance. Different in her own way, however, jealous of those who had relationships not because they had found someone they matched with, but because they even felt the urge, that passion. She had the ache to create, but not to settle down and pop out several children of her own. She was an artist and a storyteller, and still, she often felt a pang of regret that she didn't feel so strongly about anyone in that way. Boys didn't thrill her, and neither did girls. Not any she had met yet in any event, and certainly not Runsafel. She loved him in her own way, but not romantically.
“Are you just going to block my way, or let me go, Run?” He clenched his jaws, seeming to be considering it, but finally moved as she gave a slight huff, putting her hands on her hips. She pushed past the swirling ash and dust, flinging open the door and stepping out onto the cobblestone driveway. As she marched toward the road beyond it, Runsafel called out behind her,
“As you wish, my Princess of Ash! Your imperiousness, your grace! Keep going and don't look back on us lowly peasants!” She rolled her eyes, shaking her head, and ignored his parting jab.
============================================================
So, here we meet the main framing narrative character, Bellona Ato! Dross of Sorrow is a Frame Story, akin to Frankenstein, Apocalypse Now, The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story, and other works where there are stories within stories. Most of the tetralogy will follow Caitlyn Corvin and others from her time period, but Bellona, like the reader themselves, will be learning about the truth behind the tales from a book compiled by a historian, using journals, documents, and other historical records to piece together what had happened centuries before Bellona's time: the foundation of Dunklestadt. It all starts with a girl who was about the same age as Bellona when her adventures began, though they were rooted in more tragedy than our little Princess of Ash had dared to imagine. In another three days, we'll meet Caitlyn Corvin herself, within her time period, amidst battle.

Dross of Sorrow is an adult dark fantasy with themes of assorted physical and mental traumas and disabilities (CW: Rape, PTSD, Loss of Choice, Amputation, Withdrawal, Poisoning... not in a glorifying manner but as contextualizing how deeply each impacts a life and those around it and bringing up conversations about the subject matter). It is also about sacrifice and determination, love and loss, and the horrors of magic, science, and fantasy tropes on and off the battlefield. While this sample deals with the build-up before some of the 'becoming an adventurer' phase, the story as a whole features a cursed female main protagonist in a triad relationship separated due to antagonist actions, layers of narrative framing, magic swords, ancient technology and mage wars, black powder, vampires, liches, specters, monsters, sea-faring, bushcraft, constructed languages, and assorted fantasy species in a world where humanity has the smallest political power.
The novel follows Bellona Ato (framing narrative character, more important in following books) as she learns that one of her favorite heroines from old tales, Caitlyn Corvin, was one of the founders of Dunklestadt, the city she calls home. Eager to learn more about her inspiration, she borrows the tome her aunt wrote in order to read it, ending up stuck in a condemned house to wait out a massive storm that is flooding the city. As she reads, she uncovers the truth behind the tales, the heartache, joy, sorrow, and wonder of the life Caitlyn experienced. For one so glorious in old tales, her heroine is a scarred and fierce survivor, masking her pain with laughter and bravado. And yet, despite everything, there is a glimmer of truth to those tales as well, to the desperate determination she channeled to ensure her loved ones and her world did not fall into darkness.
"Cling to what remains when you refine your rage, your loss. To the dross of sorrow. To everything that weakens it, that opens your heart again. Promise me."
I would appreciate critique here for chapter one, and if anyone would like to critique more than that, please send me a message, or state such in your replies. I will be posting the next chapter in three days, give or take, and chapter three another three days after that, before NaNoWriMo starts, and I begin the second book, Hammered Hope.

2020.10.22 03:43 caitl Hot Take on Calzona

Okay so I used to think I was a Calzona fan and that things went south after the plane crash.
I’m now on another rewatch and I’m now at season 11 post separation and this time I think that Calzona was actually a really toxic pairing from the start.
Here’s the TL;DR: Calzona is a bad pairing and the healthiest relationship Callie was ever in was her sex friendship with Mark.
Callie is such an open hearted loving person and falls in love so easily and Arizona crushed that not once but on multiple occasions. She was abusive and gas-lightey. This doesn’t mean I feel that Callie is without fault in how their on-again-off-again relationship goes through the years but here’s some of my thoughts on Arizona.
-their first break up when they’re having the argument about having kids or not. A very realistic and reasonable argument to have, Callie was willing to sacrifice having children to be with Arizona and ultimately Arizona says she’ll have kids if it means they can be together.
Sure it doesn’t sound like she’s being selfish but these two perspectives and desires are completely opposite and bound to wreck a relationship. They may have been better off amicably splitting after a whirlwind romance and found partners with plans that aligned with each other’s wants and needs.
-So they get back together they want to have a bunch of babies together that’s not gonna backfire at all. Arizona gets her once in a life time chance to go to Africa. Another big bump in the road. Yes Callie is being a bit of a child but really what should have happened was a grown up conversation of what do we do next? Again an amicable separation may have been healthiest here but instead Arizona has a tantrum at the airport says you’re not coming and just takes off without Callie. Not very mature and not a healthy way to end things.
-Arizona comes back like what...3 weeks later? Desperately begging Callie to take her back, no call no notice. She finds out Callie is pregnant after sleeping with Mark and she is mad. This is where the gas lightey shit is happening. Arizona feels she’s blindsided and trapped into having a kid when she’s the one who left Callie and then suddenly appeared out of nowhere begging to come back.
-The marriage proposal did not come from a very positive place, but rather an end to an argument that ultimately ended up with them crashing their car and almost dying. A bad plan to try to fix a bad relationship.
-The plane crash is what really gets me. Arizona goes through some tremendous trauma and her grief is absolutely valid and warranted. What isn’t warranted is her abuse of Callie for the better part of a year. It was life or death and they did absolutely everything they could to try to save her leg and if they didn’t amputate then she’d be dead.
-the cheating on Callie. Such a moment of like what the hell. Callie was as patient and understanding as she could be putting up with all the abuse.
-Callie talks about walking on eggshells all the time around Arizona. She doesn’t feel like she can be herself anymore. She doesn’t dance in her underwear anymore. That’s a trauma response and that’s a response to the abuse.
-lastly and I’m sure I could go on with other examples but the custody hearing was just awful when Callie was trying to move on with her life. Not saying Callie had the right to take Sofia away from Arizona and move across the country with zero consequence but that trial was just brutal in general.

2020.10.22 00:54 granthinton Incomplete - Part 1

Incomplete Part 1
Dear Detective,
I wonder if you have found the man’s body I left for you? Killing was harder than I imagined but harder still is writing this. God knows I’m not a literary man. What I am I can’t hide anymore.
So I go quickly in this dark night, lest I be found.
I’ve always loved games. Do you like games? For such a serious man I believe not. The rules are simple. Catch me and I will stop killing. Fail and your world crumbles.
How tragic that you're leaving us. Will you miss it? I imagine that you won’t.
Removing the leg was even harder than I could have imagined. He was a wriggler. I profess the inability for the practical side of amputation gave me pause. However, I’m a quick learner. And I promise in the future his contribution will not be forgotten. I will take more care when I operate.
One thought it prudent to commence with a leg, John. It showed my integrity and passion. Also a solid foundation. That’s what I need for my legacy, Detective. Only without the crippling weakness of protecting a family, No wife. No daughter. No son.
Forty years service! Well done, your country owes you a debt of gratitude. That is the truth. They do. Retirement must seem like a dream come true. Whoever disagrees can find truth at the end of a tenure.
I believe; London believes, it isn’t done with you. You are as much a part of it, in the bare bone sense of it, as I.
I wonder if you’ll miss him?
When you turn your back on the scum of London what relief you shall feel.
Tell me, do you think you will get bored with retirement, Detective?
Not that I care, it’s just that I've only begun my game.
It would perish if you leave and someone else takes your place. I could keep going, but sincerely, I don’t think I will be forthcoming if that happens. Because you have to be involved, unequivocally. I need you. Only you can fully understand my eternal struggle.
Where I’m coming from. Only you know the pain and suffering of life.
So, Detective. my kindred spirit, are you ready to see my legacy unfold? I really do hope so. Because today marks my prestigious coming out. So let’s have a celebration, I’ve gifted something only you will appreciate. Your son’s finger. Are you ready?
Think fast, things are afoot. Or should I say a leg? Bye now.
N.
Before the letter, I was an average cop. Wife, young son, punch in, punch out, done my time, kinda cop.
Until that fucking letter.
My life changed. Three words were all it took to break me.
>Your son’s finger.
I didn’t know who’s finger it was I was holding. I should have, shouldn't I? A father knew these kinds of things, knew the feel of his child’s flesh when it’s in his hands. But somehow, even after reading those three fucking words, I was shook.
Then Julie called and the screaming began. He - I hope it was a he because I want to kick the living shit out of him - had snatched Xander from school. The fucking idiots hadn’t realised until role call. Then it was too late. My son was gone.
The sick bastard hand-delivered the letter above to my front door like a Christmas card. Who does that? My front door! I read that thing fifty times before it registered.
Later, I found out at the station who the other person was the writer was talking about. The poor bastard's name was Louie Pascal Waters. He’d been found face down in a storm drain on a bypass in East London. Walters was the first piece of a puzzle I didn’t want but needed so badly. A piece that was my only chance at finding my son.
But it amounted to nothing.
Apart from a missing wallet, a phone and a right leg, Waters was all there. All his clothes were intact, no tears, no rips. The keys to his Jaguar parked at Canary Wharf were in his pocket as well as a pair of slightly damp tickets to Snatch the musical. Waters sustained a head injury but blood loss claimed his life. The author had taken his leg and then replaced his trousers? Who does that?
I saw the photos of the crime scene. I knew what the killer meant by being sloppy. The surgical work to the leg wasn’t great. I would use the term butchered but my father was a butcher and his knife work was far better.
However, two things became apparent rather quickly at the station. I had two weeks left until I officially retired and I had no clue how to find my son.
“Good evening London! It’s 10:53 and it's time for the wind-down mix on London’s Heart Fm.”
The rain hits the roof with heavy drops, the kind you know no amount of waterproofing will prevent you from getting wet. Rowland, my partner, flicks the remains of his cigarette out the partially opened window and blows what was left out of his lungs in a slow measured breath.
The car idles. A steady burst of yellow light penetrates the rainfall and illuminates the crime scene unfolding in a stairwell in the recesses of a tower block in Lewisham, South-East London.
“Laura Clark, 28, mother of three, found dead by a passerby at nine o’clock.” Rowland fingers through the report card. “Jeez!”
“What is it?” I ask, watching the men and women of the metropolitan police move about in the rain.
I open the letter, the worn creases folding easily, and read it for the thousandth time. A few week has passed since my son’s disappearance. Julie barely looks at me anymore. Electing to go about her day as if I was a ghost. I can’t blame her, I feel washed out like a ghost myself. Like a phantom. I don’t make a difference anymore. And just like a ghost. I hold onto the one thing that ties me to this world. Xander.
I fold the note and pocket it as Rowland hands me a picture attached to the dossier in his hands. Before I even hold it he breaks for the door. I watch his back arch, then again as he heaves. I leave him to puke out the door and regard the photo.
“Who would do such a thing?” he asks, spitting the taste out of his mouth. He looks back at the picture. I see the colour draining from his face.
“If you can’t take it, don't look,” I chide.
As if on cue, Rowland pops the door open again and empties the remainder of his stomach into the gutter. I look up at his racking body and then out the windshield. Pieces of his lunch sail like malformed islands on the river of rainwater to a nearby sewer drain.
“Some cop you are,” I scoff, shifting through the report. I stop. Flipping the page around again and again as my anticipation grows.
It has to be. The cut, the missing organ.
Rowland wipes his mouth on his sleeve and shakes his head. His dark brown hair looks almost black, like a galaxy, and the speckles of rain like millions of stars. He takes in my wide eyes, knowing something wrong he turns off the car.
“It’s him,” I say, popping open my door.
Suddenly the rain isn’t a concern anymore. A few seconds and a stumbling, out of shape run later, and I’m breathing hard on the black metal balustrade of the concrete stairs.
“You got another partner yet?” I ask, breathlessly. I don’t want to admit it but I miss the force.
“Not yet, they said, ‘I’m challenging?’”
A pudgy faced young officer looks over at me with quizzical eyes from a white sheet covering the crime scene.
“I'm sorry, sir. But this is an active crime scene. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” The lady officer raises her hand to stop me. I reach inside my jacket and pull out my old shield.
“Ah, sorry, Sir, right this way.”
“What we got here,” I ask pointing to the white sheet.
“Laura Clark, Sir. Murdered by...”
“...Not the girl,” I cut her off. “The sheet. Since when is this common practice?”
“Just following procedure, Sir.”
“Whose procedure?”
“Detective Monroe, Sir,” The girl looks hurt but holds open the sheet so Rowland and I can go through.
“That twat, that just what I need...”
The sheet was a bad idea. The muggy conditions of the rainfall has created an oppressive atmosphere and the few hours of exposed flesh has developed the smell into a nasal killer. Rowland covers his mouth, but it only takes him one look at Laura for him to bail. I don’t know if he has any more bile to give to the earth but he’s going to try.
“Bullett, I thought you’d make an appearance.” “Ah, shit.”
The sheet was also bad for soundproofing. It’s clear by the lines across his forehead that the other man heard my comment.
Detective Marius Monroe raises from his crouched position and approaches me. The dark-skinned gentleman wears an iron-grey suit better suited for casinos than crime scenes, but his light-blue eyes say otherwise.
‘As sharp as they come,” the inspector told me once over a game of golf. “Fresh out of cadet school and straight into the big leagues.” Couple that with a degree in criminology, criminal psychology, and a major in biology, and this guy is something else. And everyone at the station knows it too. It was clear meeting Monroe that he encompasses everything that I’m not.
Young, passionate, and ruthless.
“Yeah, funny that. Someone didn’t pass along the details,” I scratch the back of my neck.
If it wasn’t for Rowland, I wouldn’t have known at all. The oppressiveness of the cubical intensify as he gets right into my grill. The smell of spiced cologne partially blocks the smell of death, though, so that’s a good thing.
“That’s because it isn’t your case anymore. Now get out of my crime scene,” he stabs me in the chest with a manicured finger to emphasise his point.
“Can’t do that.”
“You can and you will. You’re retired, go home and leave this to someone who can actually catch criminals.”
He turns back around as a forensic officer shows him a slide on an iPad.
“That’s good send it off,” he says, turning back around. “You still here?”
“It’s the same killer, Marius.”
Monroe’s eyes narrow.
“Do I know you? Only my mother calls me Marius. Or maybe we drink tea together?” His eyes narrow further and I open my mouth to speak, but he cuts me off.
“Because if we did drink tea together then you can call me by my Christian name. But I don’t ever remember you offering me a cup of tea. Come to think about it, I don’t even think I’ve seen you with a cup of tea. So, fucking enlighten me! If you know me so well, how do I like my tea, hmm?” I can see the disdain as he runs up my tired jeans, crumpled t-shirt, worn leather jacket and aged face.
“White, no sugar?” I have no fucking idea. He could take it on a plate with velveteen fucking doves whistling waltzing Matilda for I knew.
“I drink coffee!”
Of course, he did.
I know I’m screwed. I’m not even a cop anymore, there’s no way I can gloss that fact over with Mr straight and narrow in front of me. I hold onto the one thing that has served me well over the last forty years. Honesty.
“Its the same killer who took my Xander, Monroe.”
The lines on his forehead soften. So does the anger behind those steel eyes. I don’t know if Monroe is a family man, we’ve never been that close in the two years he’s worked at the station, but it’s all I have to use.
The pain of losing a child does something to you externally. It robs you of the joy that that child instil in your life. All that remains is bitterness and cruelty all rolled into a tight ball of, ‘go fuck yourself world’. People see it in the way you walk, how you hold your head, and by the look in your eyes.
“If it is or isn’t, it’s not your concern anymore. Go home.” He says, more forcefully.
I can tell his anger is still there. Just barely below the surface ready to explode again. His eyes are tight, calculating. The dilation of his iris’s reminiscent of a predator sighting up the kill to see if it is worth it or not.
“Come on, man. This bastard took my kid! Help me out, for Christ's sake.”
Monroe studies me for a long time. His blue eyes flick to the lady and then back at me.
“You really need to leave this case alone, it’s already driven you to despair, John.”
I wait. A pleading look in my eyes. I need to examine the scene. The lady is potentially a lead to my son’s killer. I have to know, and if this resort doesn’t work I’ll be left with fighting fire with fire. And assaulting a fellow officer is bad juju.
“We are all done, Sir.” A forensic officer calls from the sheet divider.
“Do yourself a favour and let me handle this. Go home to your wife and try to live the rest of your days in relative peace…”
I open my mouth to tell him to go fuck himself but he stops me short.
“...I don’t know what you’re going through, I won’t pretend, but this, right here, racing around thinking you're still on the force, that shits not on. You’re going to get more than yourself in trouble if you keep this up. And Rowland should know better.”
“So, are you going to blow wind up my ass or let me examine her,” I motion to the lady slumped against the wall, impatiently. The heat of my anger and frustration is slowly rising up my collar.
Monroe sucks air through his teeth. “You’ve got five minutes and then she’s getting bagged.”
“Thank you, Monroe,” I say with genuine thanks. The ball in my throat works its way back down into my chest. I creep toward the lady, something about the way her chest is cut reminded me of Waters.
“And John?” Monroe holds the sheet aloft. I almost forgot he was still here.
“Hmm?” I swing around momentarily confused.
“Get some sleep, you look like shit.”
With that, the sheet comes down and I’m left alone with the murdered lady, and the young people officer.
“Who found her?” I ask.
The blonde officer pulls out her notepad and runs a finger down the page.
“Debra Harris. A neighbour of the deceased. She was on her way back from Bingo and found Laura. She called it in straight away.”
Although Laura was unmarked and unmolested excluding the incision. The scene was still grizzly, blood-smears like angel wings behind her on the concrete wall, etched into it by a finger over her right shoulder is the number 14. Blood coats her blue jeans and white cropped top, which is still intact. It’s like whoever did this took the time to take it up, de-bra here, do the business and then pull it down again. But what it covers is a different story.
A slash down her chest allows access to her sternum. Inside, passed the broken pieces of her rib cage I can see something has been taken. The precision of the cut and removal of her heart reminds me grimly of the nefarious murders by Jack the Ripper. I wonder if the deceased had the same vocation as the murdered girls of 1866.
Was Waters a prostitute too?
“What do we know about Laura?” I take out my phone and snap a few shots of the wings and the number. Then I peel her shoulders off the wall one by one. The young officer smiles at me and then remembered her notes.
“Oh! Mother of three. Divorced. Lived here for approximately four years. Mrs Harris said she was a quiet woman. Had a few family members that came to visit from time to time, she also attends a toddler group with her youngest and had quite a social profile.”
“How so?” I ask. There’s no blood behind Laura. It’s possible the operation - if you could call it that - took place on the floor and then whoever the residing surgeon was, placed her up against the wall to hide her wounds.
But that’s not right.
I move back taking in the whole picture. She was prostrate to the world.
The killer had given her angel wings. Did they mean she was a saint? Or were they suggesting they were an agent of God? The killer wanted her found. But why?
“She had an only-fans account. Quite a few subscribers,” the blonde officer gravitates towards me. Something about the way she looks at me gives me a chill, I don’t know if it’s the small quirk of her smile or the proximity between us, but I’m suddenly quite hot.
“Do we have a username?” I ask as a way of distraction.
“HeartBreaker1982.”
The blonde officer jumps as Rowland opens the sheet and she takes her hand off my arm. I don’t know if it’s the pin in my eyes, but she’s not the first one to think I need comfort. Rowland wipes the back of his mouth again. A sheen of sweat on his brow glistens as he lets the curtain drop. The embarrassment clouding her face isn’t lost on him.
“What's this then?” He grins.
“Nothing,” I respond, embarrassingly.
“Umm, this might help, detective,” The officer levels a video at me.
The lady now laying in a pool of her blood smiles seductively into the camera. A computer game plays in the top corner of the screen while she chats away. I had never heard of cosplay before and this is a weird experience for me. With the additions of neon blue hair and lipstick, a seriously low cut top showing more of her breasts than my groin can handle and her flirtatious smile, Its the same girl. What draws my attention is a distinctive scar running between her cleavage.
“Find out when that happened,” I point at the scar and Rowland nods. “I’m on it.”
“If she had heart surgery, there’ll be records and I want to know about it. Where are Laura’s children now?” I ask, turning to the lady officer.
“Child services have them. Laura was working lates this week. The three kids are being looked after by a babysitter.”
My heart breaks. I couldn’t imagine how the children will feel when they’re told. Christ! I’m a grown man and losing Xander broke me.
I go back to Laura and lift each arm. The resulting bloody fingerprint under the left armpit is like winning a jackpot. Rowland ambles over with the sleeve of his coat over his nose. I watch as he lifts her hand and then the other.
“What are you looking for?”
“Left hand, index finger.” Rowland nods and moves back to the safety of the sheet. I take a deep breath as a fuck you to him and open her palm. As I curl her fingers open I see the red stain on her index finger.
“Whoever they were, they were good,” Rowland says with a smirk.
Like I don’t fucking know that!
“Fuck!” The triumph feeling vanishes. Replaced with the sudden realisation that I have no clues to go on but the surgical scar. And if this was the same killer, where is the goading letter? I can’t shake the feeling that I’m out of my depth. And I’m no nearer finding my son’s killer.

2020.10.20 07:40 granthinton Incomplete Part 1

2020.10.18 22:44 Mobile_thoughts When he is too good to be truth but you are not enough.

We are being dating for a bit, just few months. We met before the pandemic and for some reason he [33M] reached out few times since we live pretty close and as a lot of people he was struggling with the loss of habits and social life.
He is friends with my younger sister and her partner, and he "matches" their lifestyle as well. He has a very successful career, bought a house, he is handsome and well dressed and spend a lot of time indulging in small or big luxury things, from travels to a sports car. Like my sister, he doesn't have the "look at me" attitude, he is a hardworking professional and he came across as self-aware and disciplined.
Nothing like me. [31F]
I am steadily going down, like a slow-motion decline. It started with going to university with little aware of the job market, being extremely confused and disappointed after getting out, working in positions where minimum wage is the only reality and school loan that eats every other cents. I lived off soup and beans for five years and in 2018 I managed to pay it off. Then I got in an accident, just few months after I got a better position. I got a few bad injuries and a lot of medical bills on top of it. The HR found a simple way to fire me while I was in hospital and I went back to my parents.
I did therapy. It helped, because I was very suicidal and confuse about those feelings, I got PTSD as well, my attention span for a long time was reduced to nothing. I found a job in a grocery store and then continued to work in retail in different position. Right now, my job is still secure, but not for long.
I am really plain, can't afford nice clothes or even the time to shop and find something flattering. I have few scars that I hide and I don't use makeup at all. My hair have lost their nice curls and I am just a very tired person. I should not date, I know. But sex is something that I like and I am big enough to realize that it's my way to express emotions and release tension. I am very clear in my profile about my boundaries and until now, I never had really bad experiences.
He reassured me that he was not looking for "love" and since he was worried about his own future. It's the first time that instead of finding a "stranger" in some apps, I decided to let someone that "knows me". I am ashamed for that. For some reason, I said yes and now I am in a situation where everything it's too good to be true.
He is caring, he treats me with kindness and he has a matching libido. He seems to enjoy our time together and he even was comfortable to tell me how hurt he still was about his ex. The woman left him after nearly a decade together since she changed her mind about marriage and kids. It was amicable but at the same time incredible hard.
Sometimes he comments on how beautiful I am (which is a lie) or how skilled I am (super lie) and my reactions is just to look over my shoulder if maybe he is referring to my sister or someone else. We agreed that this thing was a lightweight relationship, I asked him to feel free to tell me if he wants to date around or if he lost interest. In the first few weeks he went to a zoom date with someone he was supposed to meet, but after that nothing happened. Every now and then I remind him that he is free to look/date and the last few times he shot down the argument quickly.
I always dreamed of kids and husband, like a lot of people do, but after the accident I am realizing how silly it was. Disney made it too easy. Lifetime movie too glamorous. Sitcom too funny. My love language is physical, but I try to not do it in front of people or outside of the bedroom. He tried to grab my hand few times and even if I indulged once or twice, it felt like a fraud. I feel like a fraud. I am wasting his time. Instead of searching for his right woman to spend his life with and have a bunch of kids, he is spending his free time with a plain, not successful and with a lot medical issues woman who doesn't have much to offer. He recently insisted to drive me to the hospital when I was sick and it took care of me for the rest of the day. I cried few times, he asked me why, but I couldn't told him. I had a tough childhood. My dad left my mom when she was expecting me. It broke her heart. She never dated, worked to put food in table and spent all her time or money in courts, while my dad got a young new wife, launched a business and retired young. No adults had time for me. My dad and stepmother treated me like I was an annoying guest, and my mother was emotionally distant. Even when I had the accident, nobody really checked on me or my progress. At one point, doctors were talking about amputation, but I guess they spent their time fighting each other, instead of supporting me. My dad only paid peanuts to my mom, never contributed on my education but insisted that I went to an expensive one "to make him proud" so he could tell to his friends that I went to this or that. I did it thinking our relationship will get better, it didn't. My sister mentioned to her mother who I am dating and now the family thinks I am set for life, at the same time, some of his friends told to my sister that I am not "his type" and this is just a phase.
I feel like it's all wrong. He should be dating another person and I should just continue to find some FWB situationship with people who don't have any connections with me, so when they will move on, I will not be broken as I was before. I am not in a position to offer him more. And I can see how much he wants to progress in this relationship. Maybe it's the lockdown, maybe it's his past and a bit of uncertainty are pushing him to make comments or say things that are too good to be truth.
How can I tell him all of this? Do you have any suggestions on how introduce this argument? I always sat on the other side, when I was younger, so I don't what to say or how to explain.

2020.10.15 18:07 RainForTheParade [M4F] Looking for a long-term roleplay partner! Tons of HORROR and ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE prompts inside! Open to ALL genres! Fandoms are also listed if you prefer! Canon and OC welcome!

DO NOT MESSAGE ME ABOUT YOUR GROUP OR SERVER! THIS IS FOR 1x1's only! I prefer discord, and do not use kik, or Reddit PMs!
This ad is huge, so I’ve cut up genres into sections. The largest is the first section which revolves around horror plots I have, feel free to skip around to find your preferences. If I don’t have a genre or fandom listed, that doesn’t mean I’m not open to it!
Hello! I'm currently looking for a long-term RP partner who enjoys original world or fandom based RPs! While I have a couple ideas, I am more than happy to hear out my partners. Below I’ll start with the horror genre, but if that’s not your thing, feel free to skip around to fandoms or other genres!
Please note that I am looking for romance as well for most of my plots/roleplays, though I only write MxF in which I play Male. If you aren’t wanting romance, let me know ahead of time as to certain plots I am willing to do without, while others I’m not.
Horror:
St John's Hostel
This is an idea I have that centers around the employee's of a hostel that sits almost 15 miles away from the nearest town. It sits on no maps, and googling it will give little to no results. The premise is that all things supernatural and abnormal seem to happen. Whether it be weird guests, serial killers, cannibals, Bigfoot/Sasquatches, or something else just as abnormal. The employee's are more than aware and accustomed to things that go on. Such as 'avoid the screams from the basement that happen every night from 2:11 am to 3:49 am.' Or 'Don't leave meat outside for the wildlife on a Wednesday night.' Then there is the high mortality rate of customers. It's not unlikely to find a man turned into mincemeat, or see some wild beast making its way off with a body. Though it seems most employees are exempt from these cruel fates, long as they know what they're doing.
In comes your character, a new employee working there for whatever reason, and completely oblivious to the state of things and what's happening. Their background and reasons for being there are 100% up to you, so long as they aren't familiar with the abnormalities.
Green light
[Based on the world of 'Control', 'Alan Wake', 'Quantum Break', and several others with similar themes]
So while this is far from the most thought out idea I have, it's one I would love to utilize. Generally another example people have added it to is 'SCP.' which is also a semi-accurate portrayal.
The Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) is a clandestine United States government organization tasked with the containment, study, and control of paranatural phenomena. Operating on a national scale, the FBC investigates events and objects which violate the scientific laws of nature, with the goal of understanding and controlling these elements. The Bureau's headquarters is a mysterious Brutalist skyscraper in New York City known as the Oldest House, which exists outside of ordinary reality.
The FBC is responsible for both the scientific study of paranatural elements and the protection of the nation (and humanity as a whole) from these forces. Among the phenomena studied by the FBC are Altered World Events (AWEs), Altered Items, Objects of Power, and other realms and dimensions. The Oldest House, itself a paranatural location, serves as a containment and study facility for these types of phenomena.
I would love to do something involving this theme, granted I'm not married to it, and everything is open for discussion. Alternatively I am also open to it not even being revolved around the actual group/organization but instead something that would be cause for alarm. Such as a semi-large scale event or being. I would love to discuss this one!
Conspiracy
Based on an old show, and short horror series]
Conspiracy is somewhat akin to St John's hostel, though instead of following a desolate location, it takes place around a small town of just under 10,000 people. It's most notable features is that it sits right on the border of Oregon and Washington [though every resident claims it's only one of the two states.], it's lack of actual location on most maps and registries, and finally the amount of woodlands and nature that surrounds it. However there is a special thing about the small town. It is a hub for all things supernatural and horrific to come around. From beasts that claw their way into homes to feed on those who were unfortunate enough to lock their door, to small creatures that steal simple jewelry at night. From werewolves to a land shark, nothing is off limits. With the abnormal amount of death toll, it stays oddly populated for several unknown reasons. Some of the people in the town acknowledge what happens, while others pretend that it simply doesn't happen and put it to the back of their mind.
Even so, there are several sinister things going on that stick out just enough if you were to look for them. From a small wake that seems to always stay in business due to the horrible events, to a small diner which you can swear the meat doesn't taste like anything you've ever had before. Or maybe the fact that the small abandoned carnival in the woods turns on for one hour every Saturday night at midnight. And finally the biggest fact, being that it is home to several serial killers that rarely make the news.
The plot and story are open on this, but I do have several ideas in mind along with a character, though I am glad to hear any suggestions or ideas.
The Bayous A ‘Conspiracy’ location with a more eerie feel. This is still part of the conspiracy prompt, though gives the option of another setting that focuses on a more swamp based environment instead of something set in a more forest-like location. All the information given about background is still relevant!
Set in a different location but still part of the Conspiracy prompt, this focuses on another small town. Located in Louisiana. Unlike the other, this town is all about making a name for itself. A variety of claims seem to have made the area a local tourist attraction, despite the amount of gruesome deaths that occur constantly. Because of this, the local town set just a few miles down from the swamplands seems to have become bustling with activity. Attracting all kinds of attention from media outlets to horror enthusiasts who want to get as close to the real thing as possible. From horror themed carnivals to the local drive-in featuring horror movies, it seems that this town place has really leaned into the fame it’s gotten. Many of the locals also seem to share in this love that their home has gotten. Though even with all the tourism and names, very few locals actually wander into the swamps. And those that do make sure to be back by the time the sun is down.
Slaughterhouse
A recent string of mass disappearances cause a stir in the nation. The most recent being an entire town's worth of residents to have just disappeared. One of the biggest reveals being a drone shot that showed the words 'CROATOAN' spray painted along a police precinct. This immediately attracted the attention of the media from outside the nation. Because of this, the event was dubbed 'The Roanoke Disappearances.' after the famous colony that seemed to have shared quite a few things in common with the most recent.
However this story follows not those left to look behind the disappearances, but the disappeared. Awakening in an alternate world which could be described as a broken mirror of the original. People are forced to kill each other and extra dimensional beings and beasts told only in story for spot. Mostly to appease some kind of beast.
There is no meaning of fair. People of all kinds are forced to go up against each other. From the elderly being thrown into a death match between a pro wrestler, to an office worker having to fight a pack of mutated wolves. The word 'bloodbath' does well to define this.
---
While the plot revolves around those forced against each other in a broken world, it's more than open for discussion and nothing is set in stone! If you prefer them forced into a hostile world instead, I can happily work with that as well!
Blood and Snow
This one is based off of a small animatic called 'Let's Split Up.' I'm a huge fan of horror films and slasher films. Not to mention Native American mythology. The idea is that it follows two shape shifting wendigo during a blizzard in the mountains. Unlike previous winters, it's reached the lowest temperatures in the last 50 years, not to mention that everywhere seems to be snowed in. With a brutal storm the two are forced to co-exist as a bunch of camp counselors celebrate and party. Set in the 80's. The biggest difference is that one wants to slaughter and eat their way through them, while the other isn't so keen on killing off everyone immediately. While this does rely on two wendigo, you can easily have your primary be human.
Something based on slasher movies
If you've seen any slasher movie in your life, then you already know what's up. Looking for something that really hits the old school feel akin to the movies involving Jason, Micheal Myers, Ghost face, and all the like. Characters and ideas can be discussed, everything is on the table!
Something much more Lovecraftian or eldritch horror
I would love something that really leans into eldritch and general Lovecraft territory. Now word of caution, I am far from the most knowledgeable on this, though I do have the power of google on my side. Generally I love having it set anywhere from WWI all the way to modern day. Though personally post-WWII or post-Vietnam are my favorites but just a bit extra. I love seeing the characters out of their depth, against unreasonable odds, surrounded by monstrosities that should be non-existent. From deep ones and their semi-human offspring, to curses that have plagued families to generations. Not to mention all the cults we can get to see! The options are endless!
High rise
This plot revolves around what seems to be an undetermined number of floors in a high rise building. [The highest known is 160 just in case you want to know what the maximum possible was.] People awake starting on floor 1. With all exits locked, and nothing but the clothes on their backs people are forced to make their way up. Most stairs and elevators seem to be useless on most floors, instead forcing those to find what is a makeshift path to the next floor. Every window seems to have been blacked out, and heavily reinforced, leaving minimal lighting unless whoever designed the hellscape sees fit to add more. Each floor has some sort of sick game that those who make it up are forced to survive. These are not tied to the rules of reality. From sicking wolves, to dealing with the undead. Weapons, supplies, and everything else is scarce. Some floors seem to be unhinged from reality, spanning what could be miles or even new environments that are impossible to be contained within a building. The farther in our characters make it, the less things can be explained.
A lot of this is up to us and how we want to decide things. We can keep it ground in reality, but I’d personally prefer it if we didn’t. We can discuss what we want to see from the plot and general settings for the floors. Not even the sky is our limit!
A quiet little town [Based on Silent Hill.]
Several strangers wake up in a small town inhabited by locals. With an eerie mist that seems to block any bit of vision just past the woods, they are forced to figure out how they got there, and why they are there. The residents of the town seem to be very few, but those that are there belong to a cult that worships a monstrosity that seems to also be hunting down the unlucky survivors.
Hostile Territory Inspired by the series ‘Manifest Destiny’ and ‘Primal’ This prompt follows a pre-modern fantasy horror setting. Most notably during anywhere from ‘1000’ AD to the early 1800’s. It also allows for an ‘AU’ of our world’s history, so don’t feel the need to follow specifics if you want to have fun! This can also be set in another setting and timeline, if you would rather a vibe much more akin to ‘Primal.’ This follows settlers and their expedition to America, Or an expedition of the Western US after it’s purchase, all the way to the time of the Oregon trail. The idea is that this follows unfamiliar territory, hostile with natives and other problems. Though many unreal, and abnormal. From beasts that should never exist, to carnivore plant life and even hive mind infections. It follows those trying to survive and reach the end, with no option to turn back. The idea is that this is unfamiliar territory. The big three options are during the early 1000’s AD, where the vikings Discovered America. Or during an alternate history Expedition of the Louisiana purchase. And of course there Oregon trail. Please note that we have more freedom, and we can even have it set somewhere else as mentioned above if you’re looking for a much different setting or something more akin to ‘Primal.’ We can always discuss this, and there are A LOT of options on the table!
Last stop. Inspired by bloodride [Which I never even watched, just saw some art of it.] This prompt revolves around those who find themselves trapped after boarding what should have been a normal bus just after midnight. Their reasons are all different, but without much matter. What does is where it’s going. The bus seems to be untethered to reality. Without any real driver, it trudges forward through an uncharted route. Those that look outside will see something different. From desolate wastelands, to ruined cities. The bus seems to always stop at a new location, a doorway into a different world. All with some kind of horror. Some that seem to be a desolate desert with no end in sight, from those that seem to be bustling with people The bus often demands fuel at these stops before once again continuing. In most cases, it ranges from something simple such as gasoline, to less realistic options such as simple jugs or water. Though in other cases, less savory demands are made, such as blood from a specific animal species or even those of the living. The bus seems to have no set times, with some drives between worlds taking merely minutes, while others have gone for almost a whole week. The most notable thing is that despite having no driver, there is a disembodied voice which acts as a guide in a way. It answers most questions, and even has something to chime in at times. The voice has promised those that make it to the end salvation, but refuses to give more information than that about their destination. The only light is that the bus acts as a safe haven, along with a good couple meter circle around it. --- This prompt personally isn’t the most detailed, as I prefer to go into specifics and come up with circumstances with my partner.
Terror Infinity Inspired by the series of the same name.
For those who are unfamiliar with the series [which I won’t be surprised if most are, it’s not exactly big, and it’s foreign.] It follows those who are forced into “God’s Dimension.” Which happens to be an endlessly moving speed rail that has quite a few rooms. The whole idea revolves around that groups of people are brought into this mysterious world and forced into famous horror movies, games, and other settings with a clear goal and purpose to survive. The idea is that they get ‘1000’ points for surviving a single event, and they have no choice in avoiding it. The reason for these points? It cost 50,000 to go back. Which means that at a minimum 50 ‘events’ must be survived. Though that’s only if not a single point is spent. What can they be spent on? The most common seems to be immediate healing upon return, which can vary from only a couple points for smaller wounds like cuts and damage, to up to a couple hundred for large scale wounds like an amputated appendage. With nearly a thousand being used to bring someone back from the brink of death. Though those can also be used to increase ‘stats’ such as physical strength, buy weapons, ammunition, and all kinds of things. Even supernatural abilities. Though that doesn’t make anything easier, the more movies the group survives, the harder they get. There is quite a bit more to this, but I’ll save that for DMs in case anyone is actually interested!
The zombie apocalypse
I have a ton of zombie apocalypse ideas as well! They will also be listed below.
1) Welcome to the freak show!
If you've ever played any zombie video game, there is a high chance that there is more than just your run of the mill 'zombie' from undead that seemed staggeringly strong, to ones that explode when you get close. These mutant freaks seem to be an uncommon breed, but by no means rare! I would love to focus on a world that includes these mistakes of nature and much more!
Some examples: Days gone, Dying light, Left 4 dead, The last of us, Dead island, And more!
2) Second generation survivors!
A generation is typically 25-30 years depending on who you ask. For this I'm specifically looking at an apocalypse that takes place anywhere around 50-60 years after it had become global. Meaning our characters [And most likely their parents.] would be born into a world that was already brought to ruins. This would mean that the undead would not be considered the same to them. Zombies seem closer to a wolf or rabid dog than a person who has passed away and reanimated. People have become used to their lives in communities and actively have little fear for the undead, typically leaving them alone.
3) A family favorite game show!
If you've ever heard of 'Dead Rising 2' then you might be familiar with TK and his incredibly popular show 'Terror is Reality.' This idea takes a bit of inspiration from it. In a world where the apocalypse was just narrowly avoided, cities and towns which had infections spread or breakout would often be quarantined then cleaned out by professional companies. In comes a new reality show all about survival. With a $100,000 cash grand prize for winning, players must survive an entire year in all matter of places. From private islands that are full of starving infected, to the quarantined streets of Hollywood. The catch? Death is around every corner. With no medical relief staff, and other players gunning it for the money. Will you risk it all for the hundred grand? Or split the winnings and play it safe?
4) Time's Arrow!
Who said the apocalypse has to be set in the modern days? I would be just as happy having it set in a historical time period. Peak of Rome? Sure! Vikings fighting back draugr? Of course! There are so many choices to choose from! The sky's our limit! [Please note, I'm primarily looking for time periods before guns advanced past muskets and flintlocks.]
5) Through the fire.
When the apocalypse initially rained down, everything of course went to hell. But where was the military during this time? The idea follows a small squadron of soldiers and civilians trying to make it across an apocalyptic united states of America in hopes of finding a cruise ship that has been giving out radio signals for the past several weeks. The catch? They are in need of a person who knows how to sail a ship long-term in hopes of reaching the Hawaiian islands. A member of the navy who happens to hold this specific skill is accompanying them. Though many trials await them on their journey.
6) Through the unknown.
Not all zombies are caused because of a virus. Some are products of a curse or a bokocaplata. This voodoo/black magic always has a source, and our characters are part of the expedition team to put an end to it! Of course several cliche characters are perfectly fitting for this idea. From the ex-marine who's now a mercenary, to the science loving geek who knows just about everything that's happening. The effects for the 'apocalypse' in this idea can be limited to just a single city/town all the way to the entire country/hemisphere. This focuses greatly on being in a developing country or tribal land!
7) Abandoned colonies.
After seven decades of colonizing mars, humanity found its future bright. With new innovations and technology only thought to be of science fiction constantly being developed, they started to become self reliant. Dome shaped colonies fitting families, and all kinds of scientists seemed to be doing exceptionally well. Though things take a turn for the worse when communications with earth shut down along with several other colonies.
8) What comes after.
I would love something set ‘after’ the initial apocalypse has come and gone. With most undead finally having withered away, minus a few large groups here and there that are in quarantine zones that have been closed off or become inaccessible by any means for the undead to escape. [For example 20 foot walls build around that would require someone to climb a ladder and such. Not the best example, but you get the idea.]
Pretty much this plot would focus on what comes after the initial apocalypse. The rebuilding of America [or another country] after things have come and gone leaving the world scattered. The time since the initial apocalypse started can be anywhere from a good 4-75 years. [4 is assuming the bodies decay at a normal decay rate, leaving them pretty much gone after 4 years. Anything above that would more closely follow the idea that they aren’t bound to normal decay like most zombie movies or shows seem to keep as a factor.]
The finer plot details can be discussed in DMs, but I would love to really see how new societies have taken to handling things in the world. From ones that have pretty laid back laws and demands, to ones that are so strict that even stealing can lead to a death penalty. I would also love to see some form of ‘universal currency’ but we can always discuss and plan that out later.
9) Ground Zero
Inspired by #Alive
While I love the apocalypse once it’s been established, this prompt specifically follows our characters from day one, ground zero. Where the first of infections took place, leading to the mass spread. I have two options for how it starts in this situation. The first is by physically spreading the normal way, which will have more of a gradual turn across the states and world as things go in a downward spiral. In this situation, we’ll see our characters traveling across America [or another country] to find a safe haven. Some places seemingly free entirely of infection, and others that haven’t quite heard the news. Where money is still being used, and our characters are able to find a sense of normality, to places that have no human life left, and are littered with the infected. The second being that everyone with AB- blood type [Around less than 1% of the population.] are immediately infected by a mass mutation of rabies, while those of other blood types only react to the normal way of spreading. Because of this, infected pop up pretty much everywhere within 24 hours, leading to a mass infection that overcomes the world easily within a week or two at most. Depending on which we go with, it’ll leave a very different world. The second will have a lack of normality and safe havens, along with real government response, while the first will have quarantine zones, carpet bombings, and much more! We can always discuss it!
10) And the rest!
Of course I am open to many other ideas, and not just what is on the list! If you have a specific one in mind, go ahead and tell me! I'm more than happy to hear you out!
That's all the ideas I have for anything horror based now, but feel free to let me know if any interest you, or you have your own ideas as well!
Fantasy:
So when it comes to fantasy, I’m primarily looking for a roleplay partner who's interested in something set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons or at least a world with many fantasy elements akin to it! While I'm more than happy to take elements and 'homebrew' races, magic, and more, I do generally want the idea to be set in a world of that setting. I have a small couple of ideas in mind, but am more than happy to hear out any you may be holding!
While fantasy is my primary interest, I am open to all sorts of it timeline/era wise. From modern to medieval, to anything in between! Even sci-fi/cyberpunk works with me! Please let me know what your preferences are so I can take that into account!
I also have nearly no triggers, so don’t be afraid to come at me full force! Though if something is too much for me, I will let you know! I will gladly hear out yours as well and make sure that no elements akin to those are involved in the roleplay!
Next off, I have several characters ready to be used, all various races. I am more than happy to let my partner choose which one interests them the most! Please note that none of them are required to be used, but it’s my primary interest in using them!
When it comes to romance involved, I do slowburn, fast burn, middle ground, and anything else in between! I’m also fine with other situations like arranged marriages, already together, etc. Please let me know your preference on this one as well so I can take it into account while we plot/world build!
As for my partner, I'm fine with a fair amount of races.
Below are those races [off the top of my head.] Please note I am open to ones not on the list, this is just from a quick jot down. Feel free to ask about any you may be interested in!
- Human
- Most types of Elven
- Tiefling
- Genasi
- Half-orc
- Aasimar
- Triton
- Yuan-Ti pureblood
- Kalashtar
- Changeling
- Simic Hybrid
- Vedalken
-OC races
- Most humanoid races in general.
I enjoy both light and dark themes, so feel free to come for either! Please note I will NOT play the role of a GM, looking for a partner, not a player
I’m also more than willing to discuss other worlds and do things other than high fantasy. Low fantasy is welcome as well!
Sci-fi/Cyberpunk
Another genre I love! While I generally enjoy having multiple races in sci-fi/cyberpunk, it is far from a requirement. Much like fantasy, I do have a cast of characters that can be used, but none of them are required to be thrown in!
For this I generally enjoy all kinds of plots, from detectives/mysteries to hardcore action. Whether it’s laser swords, high tech guns, or body augmentations, I’m always interested in most variations of this genre!
Other genres
I’m also open to nearly all other genres. Modern. Super-heroes. Slice of life. Romance. Drama. Angst. Historical. And much, much more! If you have any specific plots or genres I haven’t gone into, don’t be afraid to hit me up and ask me about them! I normally would write more, but at the moment this ad is already quite long, and I still have to go into the fandoms and myself.
Fandoms:

- And many more not on the list [Not off the top of my head.]
- And I'm open to other ones, so feel free to hit me with them!
We can always discuss shipping and such in DMs/Chat. Don’t be afraid to ask about a fandom or two not on the list, as I often end up not including every single one I’m a fan of [there is quite a bit!
While all those fandoms are open, I do have a couple plots in mind for a few of them!
DC:
I would LOVE something set with the Suicide Squad/Task Force X. Preferably with an OC that I recently have gotten designed, as I don't really write any canon villains for my primary.
Devil May Cry:
I'm thinking that it should take place post DMC 5 (Most likely several months at least). While I don't mind if you play canon or OC, I'll be having my primary be Nero. I would love it if after the events of DMC5 that things involving devils became much more common knowledge! Possibly leading to the infamous 'DMC' getting quite a bit more work and calls, possibly even to the point where they are overwhelmed.
Borderlands:
I'm more than fine with OCs, but I heavily prefer canon characters. As it goes, I'm looking for anything in the borderlands universe. So all the games/settings are open to me. While I do want something based POST-BORDERLANDS 3 or AU Borderlands 3. It isn't a must. I can do anything from Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands: TPS, or TFTB!
In the case of writing a canon character, I'd heavily prefer August, or Rhys.
Star Wars:
So for timeline wise up to the 'Mandalorian' is fine. I'd prefer if it was set during the time of the inquisitors. In the case of me playing an OC I can gladly do a Sith or a Jedi. Possibly even a force sensitive bounty hunter.
In the case of me writing Cal kestis, I'd prefer if it took place not that long after the events of SWJ:FO. Though this can be discussed.
AND MORE!
I have plenty of more plots for fandoms, but the ad is getting quite long already, so I'll leave it here!
About me:
A bit about me! I'm just your regular dude who enjoys camping, hiking, horror movies, coffee, and several other things, but I can tell you about that later! I'm currently kicking it in the east coast of the United States, which means my timezone is EST. I'm normally free any time after 2-4 pm [EST] from Monday-Friday. And then weekends I'm pretty active as well. When it comes to post length I tend to match my partner, so whether I'm giving 10 sentences or 10 paragraphs, I'm always able! I can do novella length happily! I'm 21 and have no triggers, and am willing to delve into more mature or sensitive themes, though if something is a bit much for me, I'll let you know.
I love talking OOC with partners and generally try to keep a good friendship with them if they're down for it. I won't share any info about my real life, as I've had stalkers in the past. So if I don't show you pictures of myself, or won't talk about certain aspects, please don't be offended.
I actually have commissioned art for A LOT of my characters, and am more than willing to show them! I also prefer to stick to discord when it comes to a medium/platform, but I'm more than willing to discuss other options. I will not use kik/telegram. Please don't ask.
Thanks for reading, if you are interested, simply DM me!

submitted by RainForTheParade to roleplaying [link] [comments]

2020.10.15 18:06 RainForTheParade [M4F] Looking for a long-term roleplay partner!

Thanks for reading, if you are interested, simply DM me!

submitted by RainForTheParade to RoleplayToo [link] [comments]

2020.10.15 17:44 RainForTheParade [M4F] Looking for a long-term roleplay partner!

Fandoms:
Please DO NOT ask me to write canon to your OC! I write canon x canon or OC x OC. In the case of canon x OC, I will be writing the OC.
- Devil May Cry [Nero, OC]
- My Hero Academia [Bakugo, Kirishima, Todoroki, Midoriya, Sen Kalibara, Kaminari, possibly others, OC]
- Overwatch [OC]
- Black Clover [Asta, OC]
- Maze Runner [OC]
- Avatar (ATLA) [Sokka,OC]
- Borderlands [August, Rhys [Before what 3 did to him..], Roland, human Zer0, possibly Axton, OC]
- Rainbow Six [Mozzie, Maverick, Echo, OC]
- Final Fantasy XV [Prompto, Noctis, possibly OC]
- The Witcher 3 (Game. Not show) [OC.]
- Metro Exodus [OC]
- Tokyo Ghoul [OC]
- The Walking Dead Comics [Glenn, two-hand Rick, OC]
- DC universe [Tim Drake, possibly others, OC]
- Dishonored [Corvo, OC]
- Castlevania [Trevor, Isaac, OC, More?]
- Marvel [Parker, Miles, OC]
- Evil Within [Joseph, possibly Sebastian, OC]
- Resident Evil 2 + 3 remake. Along with 7 [Carlos, Chris, Ethan, OC]
- Resident Evil movies [OC]
- Breath of the Wild [Link possibly, OC]
- Deus Ex Mankind Divided [OC]
- Star Wars [Cal Kestis, OC.]
- Assassin's Creed [Edward, Connor, Alexios, Bayek, OC preferably]
- Anthem [OC]
- LOTR universe [OC]
- Fallout [OC]
- Tomb Raider [Jonah, OC]
- Quantum break/Control/Alan Wake universe [Jack Joyce, OC]
- Watch Dogs [Marcus, Wrench, Horatio, OC]
- The Last of Us [Jesse, Joel, OC]
- Fairy Tail [OC]
- Percy Jackson [OC] [Still new to the series]
- God of War [Kratos, OC preferably] [Would love something set in the universe but not actually involving the main cast/story]
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood [Edward, OC]
- Persona 5 [Akira/Joker, Ryuji, OC]
- West World [OC] [Still new to the series, just started season 1, though I know the big plot twist..]
- Apex Legends/Titan fall universe [OC]
- Alien/Predator universe [OC]
- Fables/The Wolf Among Us [OC]
- SCP universe [OC. I will not write romance involving SCPs. Don’t ask.]
DO NOT MESSAGE ME ABOUT YOUR GROUP/SERVER! I AM ONLY LOOKING FOR A 1x1 ROLEPLAY!

2020.10.10 21:56 riveramblnc Housing suggestions for a pair disabled ringneck doves?

Hello all! I've been keeping ring-necks for 5 years now, and this is the first time I've ever had doves with disabilities. My one dove, Sploot, has a splayed leg, and while able to fly she is not very good at it, she spends most of her time on the floor of the cage I have for them right now. She gets around well and is healthy.
Her partner, Splink, has 1.25 wings. He was injured in an animal attack before he came to me. The injury is well healed, but he also, cannot fly. He can however perch.
Right now, they're in less than ideal conditions cage wise. They're in a "guinea pig" cage, the kind you get a Petco that's too small for guinea pigs....let alone rabbits. I have them on towels that I change out every other day to keep Sploot from getting diaper rash.
I'm hoping maybe someone here has experience with disabled doves, that can give me an idea of what they have done for their birds. Really, just suggestions in general. I'm not adverse to building a custom cage for them, but I wouldn't even know where to start.
I guess I should note as well that I have had my avian vet check out both birds. The estimate I got for an amputation is far more than I can afford, so I just want to make her living arraignment as comfortable as possible. She is a spunky little thing, who loves Splink.

2020.10.01 05:37 SnooCompliments1696 Unconfident Because I'm (20M) Circumcised

Hey.
I know these threads often turn into crapstorms. But please, as much as possible: don't turn this into a political, religious, or moral debate.
This is a hard issue to talk about. It's something that I view as utterly horrific, sick, and twisted. But I can't really publicly express my thoughts to anyone without sounding like some sort of conspiracy theorist, sexual pervert, or other form of assorted lunatic.
I'm an circumcised American male who noticed that he had something called a "frenulum" on the back of his penis, saw that other men like me didn't, and went down the rabbit hole researching the issue.
And well: you can't unknow what you know. Here's a short explainer I wrote to a parent about the issue: explaining why I believe what happened to me was wrong.
And I've come to the conclusion that what happened to me was really, really bad. It disgusts me to know that my parents told a doctor to remove sexually sensitive tissue from my body. The issue has killed my self-confidence, self-esteem, and given me horrific feelings towards my mother and father. I feel like they failed to protect me as parents. And that they allowed me to get sexually harmed through negligence and failing to research the issue.
I know that at the time in the Midwestern United States: "that's just what you did." And that this was something not of malice: but simply going along with what society and many doctors were saying. But it doesn't really put my mind at ease. And I'm horribly aware of the uniquely destructive damage that neonatal circumcision causes versus the procedure as a teenager or adult.
One of the other ways I know this is because other things went wrong, beyond what is normal: they didn't cut right with the gomco clamp used to circumcise me. I have an uneven amount of foreskin on my body. One side is partially covered: the other side mostly isn't. I also have meatal steosis. My meatus never neurologically finished developing. It's simply a small, consistently open slit. And it's been closing all through my life. So I'm probably going to have to have my glans opened (look it up if you want to throw up) to allow me to ejaculate and urine.
They utterly screwed up my penis.
Everytime I look at myself: I feel horribly violated, disgusting, and ugly as an individual. I can't think of sex. I can't think of loving anyone. My hated towards being circumcised as an infant can simply not be put into words. I don't know how to deal with my grief. It's killed any desire for sex or love for me. I want to be asexual. I want to kill desire. How do I get over this? What hope is there for me? I hate looking at my body. I particularly hate looking at my genitals. I just want a choice in the matter.
Having a part of my genitals removed? Shouldn't I have some say in that? Out of all the medical procedures I've gotten: that's the one I couldn't agree and consent to? What the frick... America.
I can't even talk to anyone about this. No one knows what is going on. And I'd be dismissed as a nutball or lunatic if I start ranting about this. Any therapist will dismiss my concerns as some sort of mental problem or illness: and I'll be dosed and put on some form of drugs.
What am I supposed to do? /ForeGen is researching the issue. But it might be years away: and not many people are donating towards the effort presently. They need money. They need more staff. And I need some way to have a choice over what kind of genitals I want.
I hate being circumcised. It's like a dark cloud. It's destroying my faith in God, the goodness of men, and the world. Where's my justice? No one even cares about my present plight. It's dismissed as a joke in popular culture. And I just want my whole body back. There is no sufficent word for my level of rage when it finally clicked for me.
The worst part of this is that I'm supposed to take society's word that the parts amputated from my genitals are irrelevant to sexual pleasure and enjoyment. It makes me feel like my sexuality is essentially limited and dimmed due to my parents getting conned by hospitals that see an extra couple of hundred dollars for each circumcision.
And I can never know firsthand the exact extent of what I'm missing unless some of foreskin regeneration project succeeds. Even then: they'll still be nerve and blood vessal damage, my glans penis will still be a huge scar, and I'll never get the years in a circumcised body back. The only arguable, good, and shining part of this horror is that my frenulum is essentially intact: which only occurs in >1% of neonatally circumcised men.
It's the most pleasurable part of my penis. And it's utterly gutted in 80% of neonatal circumcisions. It pissed me off. It still does. Why didn't I get a say in this? Whatever happened to "my body, my right"?
The medical justifications fall apart upon even doing basic research, Christians aren't supposed to circumcise for religious reasons, the version in the Bible was far less aggrsssive, I never even went naked in a locker room, and I've luckily never seen my father's penis: so it was all for nothing.
It's the most hideous, hideous, hideous thing in the world to hold resentment against your own parents, doctors, and society. I feel like my parents got conned by the American private medical industry: who saw a quick 500 dollar foreskin that they could cut off before I could object.
I don't even get any empathy for having a part of my penis cut off. And I would have never, never, never consented to this. The scar on my genitalia has always bugged me, and I would have always preferred to remain alone, but when I fully realized what happened to me I felt absolutely depressed. I get sad thinking about any future partner of mine who has been with intact guys will feel her in ways I may never will... It's disgusting.
As for Midwestern American women finding it gross?
Eh, I could care less. They probably only feel that way due to societal normality and pressure. And it's not like that opinion is universally held among them anyway. You only need one women to prefer your penis to be truly happy. And I don't think it's any morally different from a man like me to coerce a partner into removing her clitoral hood, modifying her labia, or argumenting her breasts. It's just a part of my natural genitalia. If a women dumped me based on that: I would dump her for her shallowness. And if I asked that of any women: they'd have every right to dump me.
It's a deep and dark hole with very little silver lining. I wish there was someone particularly to blame. I don't really claim that my parents, or random American women, or any one person or group for that matter is responsible for this: it just seems to be a tradition deeply embedded in modern American culture at the moment.

2020.09.30 02:33 sampuckettwasblack i am still mad at my science teacher for blaming me for my team’s failure + a message for my teacher

this happened around March 2nd, 2020 if anyone cares. i am now in my senior year.
in junior year, i had a class called medical interventions that basically makes their students solve cases based on a family. one of the kids got bone cancer and needed his forearm amputated so we were learning about prosthetic arms. my teacher gave us an assignment which made made us build a “prothestic arm” out of cardboard, string, clay, pins, and other basic things that you would find in a classroom in like two days. the arm had to be able to grab a cup of water and put it down. all the kids were complaining that it’s impossible, but the teacher said that in the training she had to do in order to teach the class, she was able to do it. the teacher gave us rules to not copy from the internet or else she will take points away. she also made a ranking system where people would vote first to last place and leave notes for why the groups were voted in the position.
i was assigned to a group of three and so was everyone else. one of my partners wasn’t there and didn’t show up until the day of the presentation. the first day me and the other guy were brainstorming but he basically said to copy from YouTube, which I didn’t want to do because my teacher was one of those teachers that didn’t grade individually, but as a group.
I have never liked group projects because most of the groups I was in were really bad. i tried talking to him, but kept on saying that we should copy from a video he found. I told him that the teacher said not to and that we should think of something of our own. he didn’t listen and copied the YouTube video. after he was done he went on his phone and watched soccer videos for the next TWO days. the first day in class i did a drawing of the model and planned to see how to build it. I planned to take it home, but I left it in my locker so I wasn’t able to work on it at home. The second day I worked on it while he was watching videos. I was able to make a slot for the arm to go through but I needed to figure out how to work on the fingers to grab the cup.
on the second day I took the arm home because my partner didn’t know what was going on and we would have to present the next day. at home i stayed up until two to finish the arm because I was taking three ap classes to worry about first. my partner made a cardboard hand so I attached more cardboard to make a wrist and cut off the fingers. i ultimately made the fingers out of clay that would be curved. I attached strings to each of the clay pieces to curve to hold the cup against the carboard wrist. i had loops at the end of each string so that my fingers would pull to curve the clay fingers to grip the cup. i attached everything with hot glue since that was the only thing she had and everyone used it too.
i showed up to class with my arm ready on Friday, I even came in about twenty minutes earlier to test it. but my teacher decided to give us another day and the weekend to work on it. I spent Friday practicing with the arm while my partner was watching soccer videos. On Friday, the arm was working so I decided not to bring it home incase it broke while at home, and I returned the supplies to my teacher so I didn’t bring the glue and stuff home.
On Monday, I got my breakfast and went to class early even though it wasn’t my homeroom to check if the arm was working. It was working so I put it down and left for my actual homeroom. I came to class and the teacher gave us ten minutes to practice our presentations. before i said i had three partners, but one was absent. the absent one showed up for the presentation and didn’t know what was going on. i began to practice with my arm and noticed that the clay fingers and the strings on the clay were falling off. i panicked and got the glue gun and hot glued all of the fingers and string. the presentations then started. there were around 8 groups to go and my group was the second to go. instead of telling the teacher that I needed more time I panicked and went up to present. my partners didn’t know what to say and I was left to present. I tried to fit my arm through, but the fingers fell off because the glue didn’t dry. The whole presentation itself was less than a minute and I was on the verge of tears while presenting.
I got to my seat and started crying while the whole class was silent. my teacher came over and asked what was wrong and I said the arm broke. I only had one friend in the class, because all my friends in the class had dropped from the program. my friend hugged me to cry to comfort me. we were supposed to grade other presentations but since I was crying I wasn’t able to focus. after the presentations, the groups were able to look at the other arms and I could hear some girls saying that they already knew whose presentation was the worst. after class, this girl made a tiktok making fun that I was crying and showed her friends after class while I cried in my chair.
the teacher didn’t say anything to comfort me and I left the classroom and cried in the bathroom during our break. after my third period bell rang to signal the start, i was still in the bathroom crying. the janitor came in and assumed I was smoking so he threatened to call the security on me for “smoking” so I had to go to my next class while still crying. the sad part was that the girl who made fun of me on her tiktok day right behind me with her friend, and there were other people in my next class who were in my class with me before.
during lunch i went up to the teacher with two of my friends and asked what could i do to make up for the assignment. she basically said that I have to fix the arm and present it for tomorrow’s class. I then said that I could just bring it home today and she asked why would I do that when that was kinda the reason why the arm failed. I was confused and asked her what she meant. She then told me that while I was crying in my chair, and the other groups were presenting. my partners told her that I was ignoring them the whole time and not listening to their suggestions. Keep in mind that my friends were there so they found out the same time that I did. I explained that one of them weren’t even in class while I was building the project and the other one just wanted to copy a YouTube video. She then said that even if that happened I should have asked them to bring their own ideas to the table instead of making them feel ignored. I didn’t even know how to answer to be honest, i told her that she is believing something out of context. The present partner didn’t even try to talk to me and when I asked what he thought it was only about copying the YouTube video, then he went to watch soccer videos on his phone.
I ultimately took the broken arm home and fixed it myself because I had to present tomorrow and when I went to the class to see if my partners took it to work on it, it was still there. while i was crying in class, they tried to fix the fingers, but because one of them was gone and the other didn’t want to work on it, they messed it up even more. I stayed up to twelve fixing the arm. The next day we presented and I talked the whole time. We weren’t able to pick up the cup with water so we had to try to fix up and empty cup and it barely picked it up, but i passed the requirements I guess. this one girl who was friends with both of my partners were laughing at us which made me feel bad
the next day after that my teacher told us the results of who won the competition. the group that won basically made a hook that extends to reach the cup and they pull it back to grip it and hold it up. my teacher decided to not give any groups the feedback from other students because apparently some students were being really rude. she even read a few that said “the idea for the arm is stupid” and “you deserved last place.” I can only assume that those two were for my group. i honestly thought that i wasn’t able to keep my A in the class, but my teacher gave me a 9/10 which kinda made everything not so bad.
ms. ________, if you come across this somehow I want you to know I was and am still very hurt by you believing that I was ignoring them. all throughout the year _____ was on his phone during projects and even in lectures. _____________ on the other hand wasn’t even there, so of course he would believe _______ over me because that has been since friend since middle school. even though i loved contents of your class, I disliked most of the kids in that class. they barely tried to learn in their class and copied from each other while i actually wanted to use this for my future in the medical field. I could tell that you favored ________ and you probably didn’t know that she made fun of me crying on tiktok with her 5k+ followers to see. even if you did know, i don’t think that you would have done anything to encourage her to delete it. my classes in freshman and sophomore year were all lousy, with this class i was happy to learn things about meningitis, the Elisa lab, and processes to test for genes in the DNA. after this happened though, I hated your class. in all honesty, I would have been fine if just let me grab the arm and go, but the fact that you didn’t even try to hear my side of what happened made me dread to walk into your class and learn. shortly after that incident, quarantine happened and barely had any motivation to turn in the assignment for your class due to what happened. our class was only the third one in our pathway and ultimately the last one because the school couldn’t find a teacher for the next class. for the juniors in the pathway taking your class, i hope that what happened to me never happens to anyone again.

2020.09.26 21:59 MorwenRaeven Emergency moving fund for myself and my partner, who is a recent recent amputee. My job was downsized and we need to get home to Vermont.

Legitimate life or death emergency. My partner recently had her left leg amputated just below the knee. She still has stitches. We were living in employee housing and they just "downsized" my job a month before my seven year anniversary with the company. They gave us until October 15 to be out, and the only family we have is in Vermont. We have no savings and didn't see this coming at all. PLEASE HELP!!!! We're so scared and desperate!!

2020.09.26 08:50 LupinePariah An Introspective Opinion

I've spoken about this on Twitter a little but I wanted to go a little more in-depth.
Following my completion of this game I couldn't help but notice the negativity in the press and I've come to realise just how present a problematic factor there is: privilege. I suppose that's what happens when you hire pretty people, you encounter those who haven't really had to tsruggle in the way others have, who haven't known what it's like to be on the outside and to have an outside perspective. That's what this game has. Similarly, I'm starting to think that "heavy-handed" is a shorthand for "this takes me out of my comfort zone and makes me aware of things that are making me distinctly uncomfortable."
I'll come clean with my outside perspective: I have autism. I grew up through the '70s when things weren't quite as progressive as they are today, the common usage of the r-word, commonplace ostracising, and easy abuse were the zeitgeist when it came to us. I mean, who cares, right? It's not like an r-word is going to complain or tell anyone. Sure, things are better today but not by much. The Judge Rotenberg Center has only recently been halted from using electroshock torture and even then they haven't stopped it fully, they do what they think they can get away with. The world is better than the one I knew, but not by much.
There's something about autism. I mean, it's the social programming or lack thereof. That's the thing. As an autist, I navigate through life via affective empathy. I feel what other people are feeling but it takes me time to figure it out. I want to, of course. Just because I can't immediately plumb the depths of why I feel validated or thoroughly like shit without some solid introspection doesn't mean that I don't want to. It's the opposite. I'm always trying to learn what different emotions mean.
I've noticed that I care way more than neurotypicals on average, too. I mean, sure, if a bad thing happens a neurotypical will cup their hand over their mouth but it seems to be forgotten just five minutes later. It haunts me. It all does. I keep parsing it, recollecting, colleralating, examining, cross-referencing, trying to find some meaning in all of it. I parse this through my emotions too. I have heard that this is true of introverts to an extent and from what I've heard about the difference between the longer versus shorter processing pathways it's likely true. I suppose they feel like a halfway house. The process longer, but they don't get hung up on things like us.
Sometimes we can look like a machine that's "hung" because of how preoccupied we are, this is something that neurotypicals don't really understand, always expecting immediate responses and attention due to... I don't know, really. I sometimes wonder if it's narcissism to a degree due to how they tend to love themselves to such a degree, how they fetishise the similar and the familiar, not ever realising how pathological a hierarchical state such as normalcy is. I mean, to have normal, you've also got to have abnormal. That's the way of it, it's a dualism. So what of those who're relegated to being abnormal?
What of those who want to be, or don't? Do we consider those who'd rather their diversity be accepted rather than just fetishising over the small similarities as neurotypicals want to? We know that in nature, diversity is necessary. Without genetic diversity, a species will soon become very extinct. This is why ethnic supremacy is a baffling concept. It's like a voluntary extinction movement in a way, it might not happen immediately but it is inevitable. I don't understand the desire to expediate the devaluation of life into entropy but I'm not neurotypical.
I acknowledge that.
Like I said, things are better today but everyone knows when you're autistic. They can tell. It's the lack of social programming I spoke of. Neurotypicals know what to say, do, or think. Often, it's told to them by influencers who're charismatic enough to lead them, thoughts are put in their head that they never really seem to question, they just obey them. To me, neurotypicals seem much more like machines than autistic people do because they follow their programming only rarely ever stopping to ask whether this is right, or just, or kind.
This is something we see in Detroit: Become Human with police brutality. The police are robots, they're just following their social programming and doing what was put in their heads without ever really questioning it. They just "know" that all that's in their head is right, that's what they belive anyway, and they never doubt that. Sometimes I think that neurotypicals don't have invasive thoughts that they struggle against, I'm given to wonder if invasive thoughts are a recognisable marker of neurodiversity since they're thoughts that you question, struggle against, and eventually have to learn to deny.
tt's possible, of course, that given hardship neurotypicals can become like neurodiverse people. They've been hurt so much they have to question and be introspective.
Then again... A while ago, I witnessed a campaign where an Alt-Right splinter group created a bunch of fake accounts, and using those mixed with hacked real accounts went after trans people posing as Otherkin. They bullied them, harassed and haranged them, abused them. It was wrong, but it wasn't Otherkin people doing that, that much was obvious to anyone who was an Otherkin, the language, the behaviour, it was all wrong. I mean, besides, there's a lot of crossover with states like that and autism. I think most Otherkin would recognise the inherent harm in bullying, they just wouldn't do it. And we tried to tell them that.
It didn't work. The thing is is that the Alt-Right had put this idea in their head that Otherkin were a threat to their normalcy, their safe, protective blanket that allowed them to blend in and have their thoughts given to them by those above them on the social hierarchy. We didn't do that. So they went after Otherkin people mercilessly... the online bullying and harassment by trans people was untenable. They sought to invalidate and deny the existence of species dysphoria at every turn since they thought they'd been wronged by a troll group and the majority of them?
They didn't question it, did they? They just obeyed. The programming was there adn they obeyed it. This is neurotypical behaviour as I've observed it at its most basic, tribal, and primal. It's very animalistic. Chimps and ladders, if you're familiar with that social experiment. Yes, it isn't a real experiment—to my knowledge—but it is a social experiment. The purpose of the experiment is to have one wonder about why they obey things without questioning them. There are very many experiments—social and otherwise—that prove that neurotypicals often do just obey.
I mean, look at Detroit: Become Human. I look at most of the reviews and I don't find a solid argument against them. Even with community figures like Jim Sterling whom I would've expected to know better. Still, he's neurotypical, and his programming is to rag on David Cage. That's what his programming dictates to him so that's what he does, which is incredibly disappointing. I had thought better of him and I was hurt to learn otherwise. That's what I keep learning though, again and again. Neurotypicals obey. They have their programming and they obey.
Others might obey programming too, they do it out of fear, anxiety, remorse, manipulation, or for any other number of reasons and they do so until they crack. Something just breaks within them and they realise that this isn't fair, it isn't right, it isn't just, it isn't kind. And they break. Then the programming is gone. You're on the outside then, you're looking in with a completely alien, different perspective and you can't go back. Normalcy is a warm safety blanket, but once you remove it you become a demon in the dreams of others. There's no going back from that, more than that, there's no desire to back to just sleeepwalking through life like that. Just following toxic programming without ever stopping to ask why, to question, to be introspective and really examine and try to arrive at a kinder state of existence. Normalcy isn't kind, it's inherently pathological. Normalcy is a delusion shared to uphold a power hierachy. Since what's more important to the average person than a power hiearchy and their place within it?
I brought up Otherkin. I am too. I went through over a solid decade of abuse and I have the scars and disfigurement to prove it. I was raped, beaten, tortured, locked up and denied food and water, all because I'm not like neurotypicals and because they thought they could get away with it. They thought it would be okay, that I'm... Well, you can guess what they thought, I'm too stupid to even know better, to care about what was happening to me. I was just a subhuman thing. A thing.
That was my point of relation with this game. I understand that there are many, this is just mine. I mean, like I said, anyone who's gotten to this point where they can't just be normal, where they can't just obey social programming, where they have to be on the outside? There's lots. And this account is just mine and mine alone, but there are millions of others out there who'd have their own stories to tell and I'm sure that many are even more fraught than my own.
The premiere autism forum on the Internet is called Wrong Planet because we're forced to have this perspective—that we're on the outside, looking in, trying to figure out humanity as aliens. This is how I've always felt. Having witnessed the cruetly of humans and the lengths they'd go to to just obey their programming? I can't identify as human anymore. I don't want to. I mean, if you'd lived a life like this I don't know how you could? I can't worship humans.
I don't really have Picard's perspective on humanity. I don't get that reverent self-worship for the species as though it were the most perfect thing in existence.
This perspective.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xgvEusIvDg
I don't get that. I don't see that. I see cruel robots on Murderworld and they terrify me. It's not so bad though, I mean... The Murderworld robots won't go psycho and slaughter you, just so long as you pretend to be like them, so long as you hold up the pretense of having their programming. The moment you don't, though? Their programming edicts demand that such anomalies be dealt with in the most harsh way possible. So you learn. You learn to try to act like them just to fit in. I've spent most of my life in isolation rather than having to do that too much.
It makes me feel sick.
So I'm an Otherkin. It was a decision I arrived at for a number of reasons. I was raised primarily by the kindness of dogs, they looked after me where humans wouldn't and I imprinted upon them, I learned many behaviours from them that I still have to be careful not to exhibit around any neurotypicals. They're always there though. Thus, canine is what I relate to more than human, I see more kindness there. Don't you? I think it's self evident. Similarly, I created a tulpa when I was young to keep me sane. I didn't have that descriptor for it then but he's stayed with ever since. He's a dragon. I always liked dragons.
I like intelligent dragons though, thoughtful, considerate, able to reason. I've always seen that there's something to them that upsets many neurotypicals. I don't know whether it's the horrifying notion of something more intelligent than a human or whether it's just that a being of reason is contrary to toxic Murderbot power fantasies. I mean, I see this anxiety caused by dragons as the reason that so many were lobotomised and amputated within fiction. If you take away both their mind and hands, they can no longer reason or express themselves, you've turned them into whatever war machine a neurotypical needs to get their jollies.
I mean, the height of my feelings about this was exemplified by Skyrim. I saw these dragons just writhing around on their bellies because they didn't have forelimbs to hold themselves up. They looked more like amputated dogs I'd seen at vets than birds or bats. I've been to bat sanctuaries, I used to occasionally volunteer at one where the people seemed just as autistic as I am. Well, that or some other kind of neurodiverse, perhaps even just introverted as I accept there's some crossover there.
The point is though is that on the one hand we have something like Draco from Dragonheart, the kind of dragon that always has to die for whatever reason, usually as the last dragon for humans to feel sort of bad about for a bit then better because—well hey—they survived whereas the dragons didn't. On the other, you have war machines who're commonplace, cattle lining up ready to be murdered by whatever clownsuit-waring Gamer warrior is up next. It's not a good look.
That's what I think when I look at a lot about humanity: It's not a good look.
Sure, you have people who are kind and do things to help those who aren't like them but they probably aren't very neurotypical in the first place. If they are, then it's only by a margin as they've had their programming broken, the programming that forces them to be selfish and to consider their own tribe first at the expense of all others. I don't think kindness is very neurotypical.
I'm just going to be self-indulgent here with a point that came up on Twitter and how appalled I was to be right. I mean, there was some perverse amusement in it to be sure but for the most part it was just disgust.
I postulated a social experiment. It involves a dragon. It often does with me. I like dragons. I mean, the kind that still have their hands and minds anyway, which are very sapient things to have. The first thing that a furry character gets is hands and minds, right? Take those away... Well, I won't dwell on that too much but that's why four-limbed "dragons" exist. Anyway, the point...
Four white men stand at the precipice of a yawning concavity, the tools they carry on their person suggest a multitude of military professions. In the dimly lit depths below the ancient ruins of a long forgotten city can be seen and something large lurking within the long shadows cast within. Rising out of the darkness is a scaly head that hisses at the men above, a dragon. What do you see here?
Well, they could either be heroes out to spare the nearby town from a vile plague that's been haunting it and causing them suffering for some amount of time, that's true. It could be. The one that lurks in the depths could be a truly evil creature that feasts on the suffering of mortal men, that much is a given.
Then again, the one that lurks below could simply be a vulnerable mother protecting a clutch of recently laid eggs, a couple having hatched as helpless babies unknowing of the cruelties of this world. Those standing above? They could be freebooters, bandits, vagabonds who'd heard that there was treasure to be had here, all they had to do was slay the beast within.
Now, if the latter is true, what options would this dragon have? I suppose they could try to reason with them, certainly, but how would that go? The dragon is, after all, a dragon. The belief they hold is that dragons speak only trickery and lies, so if this one is offering them all of the wealth within the city below if they would just leave them and their newborns in peace? Well, this is a trick, surely? This dragon is unlike them, it has to be a liar, and it's obviously hoarding something far more valuable it's trying to draw their attention away from.
It has to come down to a fight. Who'd live, who'd die? Who would you support? What would you do if you were there?
The answers I got were abuse over why the heroes were white men. No one actually considered the question, they were just angry that I'd used white people as a contrast to an unfamiliar presence that they might abuse. So they chose to taunt and mock me for it because of course they did, I expected that. I had hoped for better, I always hope for better, I rarely ever see it. Not from neurotypicals anyway. I mean, like I said, neurotypicals terrify me. I suppose, if I were actually anyone I'd be worried for my life. My safety is in that I am not.
I hide in isolation because that way my partner, my dog, and I can enjoy our share of peace. It doesn't stop the neurotypicals from ravaging the world around us though, we're 100 seconds to midnight and that's unlikely to change since the neurotypicals are just doing what they always do, they're following their programming. Just like the cops in Detroit: Become Human, and just like the cops in the recent American protests. The Murderbots of Murderworld. I mean, you're either one of them or you're just as terrified of them and there are so many reasons to be terrified of them. Could be something as simple as the pigmentation of your skin, your gender, or how differently your brain works.
On the topic of dragons, have you read the facsimile edition of The Hobbit? Interesting thing, that. Oh so very interesting. I read it when I was young, I got my hands on the original through my family and I loathed the edited version. Why? Well, in the original, Gollum wasn't evil. There was a game of riddles and Gollum lead Bilbo through the caves and gave him the ring, they parted on good terms. I know this seems impossible to believe but it's what was in the original book. Capitalism changed that, Tolkien decided to appeal to the neurotypicals and because Gollum looked different? Well, he had to be evil. Naturally.
Similar, Smaug wasn't originally evil either. He was very greedy, he was stricken with the same greed sickness that the dwarves themselves had. And Gandalf? Gandalf was a troubling dragon bigot whom no one should've really listened to. In the original book, it seemed like Smaug was one who could've been reasoned with. After the edit? Not so much.
What I find especially interesting is that in the film, even though he used words, he seemed even less rational than in the edited books. What else did he lose? His hands. It felt as though his words were parrot-like mimicry rather than those of a sapient mind and Smaug had been reduced, over time, to become just another mindless war machine. I mean, you need war machines for Murderworld's inhabitants to feel good about murdering. If something isn't a war machine, they're hardly going to feel good about murdering it. And they want to, oh how they want to. I mean, of course, both of those things. They want to feel good and they want to murder.
I... don't really have power fantasies like that. I'm sorry. It's not necessarily a judgement, it's just that I'm tired. Mine are of healing, rescuing, and helping. One of my favourite games was one that received almost as much vitriol from the press as this one—Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. That was a power fantasy for me, I could solve puzzles to help the bahro be free from slavery. I played a chubby, dark-skinned, bespectacled hippie. I enjoyed being that character even though I'm not enamoured with playing as a human so much.
Another interesting experience for me was Fallout 2. A game which could be played with a minimum of fatalities. I liked that. One of the bugbears for me that that left me feeling devastated was that I couldn't sav the intelligent deathclaws, no matter how much I wanted to. I mean, they had a right to exist as much as anyone else. Why not, I ask you? I mean, yes, they're not human but that isn't really a good reason, is it? I don't think it is. I feel nauseated that anyone would... That's exactly what I saw, though. Their loss was celebrated.
I remember when I replayed it at a later date with killap's Fallout Restoration mod. I saved them. There was an ending slide where they planned out a peaceful expansion North, diplomatically, negotiating with other settlements such as Vault City. They used their words. The truth is? I couldn't have been more happy. I related more to them than to any other in the game. Just as I related to Goris. Goris was an intelligent deathclaw who was special to me. You see, the deathclaws had a range of intelligence and Goris—by not being a judgemental monster—found ways to communicate with them all. He was a scholar who loved language and he didn't see diffeerentials in how minds worked as a negative factor. I loved him.
I saved Goris and his friends, I helped to enable their future where they could peacefully co-exist. I was delighted, as you might expect. I tried to talk to Fallout fans about this discovery as I was elated, a happy little puppy dog and... I was met with hostility, so much hostility. You see, it turns out that the intelligent deathclaws aren't very popular with Fallout fans. Why? An egotistical designer by the name of Chris Avellone had written a Fallout Bible. A bible, yes. I found much of what was in it contradicted other sources, it even openly contradicted other developers who had seniority over Chris or whose works he was speaking for that weren't his. I didn't find that very appealing, but they did. Chris was popular and charismatic, you see. Charismatic enough to tell them what and how to think, naturally they obeyed. As neurotypicals do.
I looked into him and found that he had some very worrying attitudes about women. I didn't like him. A decade later it turns out that Chris is in the centre of a sexual harassment scandal where he was getting women drunk to try to have his way with them. You can imagine my surprise.
That's how it is with neurotypicals. They tend not to think or question. They'll often do something really thoughtless and cruel and just wave it away with "I didn't think!" as though that somehow makes it all better, as though that's to be accepted. I mean, unless I'm reading this wrong, it seems almost celebrated amongst neurotypicals to not think. It's a high-five moment.
I've just had a lot of experiences with neurotypicals and none of them good, all of them because they have programming that they rarely ever break free from. Their influencers, their charismatic figures just tell them what to think, they obey. I'm terrified of neurotypicals because you never know what's been put in their head for them to think when you encounter them. You can hope it's not too terrible but then again it might be. I mean, thankfully, we are starting to get influencers who're trying to wield this truth about neurotypicals toward more empathetic ends. It's not just a game for charismatic sociopaths anymore. Still, even though things are improving, you can't know what they've been told to think. You can't tell what their programming is just by looking at them.
I don't know how well I've conveyed my message here but if you think that Detroit: Become Human was a cathartic experience for me? You'd be right. I'm tired of lines in the sand, I'm sick of how there's so much hierarchy and tribalism. I opted for a completely pacifistic route and I ended up with the best ending for everyone. Kara, Alice, and Luther made it to Canada. Connor, North, and Markus lead the revolution. Public opinion was on the side of the androids. I felt happy.
I mean, it's a good power fantasy to be able to win the day with pacifism. I'm not a fan of Murderworld where the only choice is to kill. I don't like those power fantasies. I'm tired of them. I'm not of the belief that video games make people violent, I am of the belief that neurotypicals simply are violent and they enjoy violent things. The Murderbots of Murderworld. That's why so much of our entertainment is the way it is. Murder is a cathartic power fantasy for most neurotypicals. It isn't for me.
Detroit: Become Human judges you, that's for sure. I felt that as I was playing and I can understand why a well-programmed neurotypical Murderbot would feel distinctly uncomfortable after playing it. The thing is though is that their loathing is telling because there are very few arguments against it that withstand even a few second's scrutiny. The most coherent I've seen is that the gameplay is old-fashioned and clunky (Skyrim's wasn't?) and that they... didn't particularly enjoy the game forcing them into a position of servitude at the beginning. The point as to why it did tending to fly over their heads, just as it flew over Jim's... I'm still disappointed about that.
I think that this game is going to separate people into two groups, since dualism is a human thing: Those who're privileged and enjoy their programming who'd dislike this game for having the sheer, unmitigated gall to question it; And those who exist outside of the paradigm of normalcy, who have no such programming anymore or never did, and they love it. It's divisive, and I think that's why.
I am who I am and because I am who I am, I love Detroit: Become Human. It speaks to the kind of life I've lead. As I said, I have scars and I'm disfigured. I won't heal more than I have. And those marks, those welts, wounds, and dents are visible for all to see to further single me out as a creautre that doesn't have the Murderworld programming.
All I can hope for is that one day we could have a world where this programming no longer exists and everyone thinks for themself. It's a high order, I know, but it's what I would want. I don't want anything bad to happen to the neurotypcials, I just want to break that programming so they can see things as they are and want to do something about it. Failing that? My tulpa, my dragon, Storynthisacaelymveir of house Pryddwr has an amazing world in my wonderland. If I could go there and drag a few others with me? Sure. I don't know if I have it in me to stay here if I actually could leave. I wouldn't want to.
It's not a good look, right? It's worth asking then that if I see this world this way, how would others further outside of it? I think that if I were an alien species? I'd be waiting to see which way this tips. Whether The Great Filter gets us through ethnic suprmeacy winning out and them having their perfect world before their dilluted DNA causes them to go extinct, or whether the world might end looking more like those of us who have empathy, who're tired of this place being like it is.
That's the question that Detroit: Become Human asks. Which way will it go?
100 seconds to midnight.
Edit: One thing I will add as a footnote? The hardest choice in the game for me was a survey question at the end, it asked what the most difficult choice was for me. It was tricky because in truth the answer was "none." I had no difficulty. At every turn, I chose peace, and wherever I could I chose empathy. I didn't shoot Chloe, my Markus was always going to be peaceful, and it didn't matter to me whether Alice was android or human—she was a person, and that's all that mattered.

2020.09.26 01:31 throwawaycadet12 A gun nut breaks down injury potential in RWBY

I wrote a long ass response to a post about injuries in RWBY, and thought "hell with it, people might like the read". Ive done long breakdowns about firearms before and they were well received. I'll touch on anime tropes in RWBY for fun. TLDR: Physics is a bitch. And of course this is all for run, not shitting on anyone. If any actual medical people want to chime in and correct me feel free, I'll edit as needed.
Disclaimer: Im an natty guard officer desk jockey. Not a medical professional, but I do spend a lot of time around combat medics and studied anatomy and physiology in undergrad. I've picked a lot of stuff up and will probably get my EMT licence at some point, likely after the police academy. Everyone goes through basic life saving stuff in bootcamp anyway.
If theres one thing humans in general just absolutely suck ass at, its appreciating the scale of the universe. This is because we have short lives and average around 5'8 and 190 pounds. We're really dust specs. We struggle with time, with space, with mass. Things get stupid really, really quick. Wanna feel small? Study astronomy.
Good example. That mech that slapped Jaune and Nora. A cubic foot of steel is 500 pounds. From what i could figure from a quick glance of the scene was the hand was something like 3-5 Jaunes tall, probably 50 ish feet long and maybe 30 feet wide. Napkin tier math, but fuck it lets play along. 50 x 30 x 18 (Assuming Jaune is a flat 6 feet, hes kinda tall). 27000 lbs going uh...i dunno 30mph on impact? Moving that much mass is going to take some serious wind up. For comparison, bigger wrecking balls are 12,000 lbs according to google. And theyre on a chain thats going to give a little on impact.
Ive seen some pretty nasty car accidents with not even 1/5th of that mass (but with more speed, that matters). You know what that would do to a real person? Pop. Like water balloons. Solid to liquid real fuckin fast. You'd slap a person and send off a mix of jelly and bone fragments.
Another common one that people don't think about from watching too much TV / Anime is falling. Even falling 5 feet can seriously jack you up if you land on something hard or just land the wrong way. It only gets worse the further you go, remember that acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 meters per second squared. Speed kills. Needless to say Adam throwing himself and Blake off that radio tower would have easily killed them both on impact, much less Ruby flying around or the "landing strategy" thing.
Also, bleeding! Something like 80% of all combat deaths in the military are related to hemorrhaging. (Hint, tool you can carry with you thats stupid easy to use is a tourniquet. You dont need a ton of training either. Zip that shit as high as you can and as tight as you can. Fits in a glove box real easy. ) When Adam gave Blake the bad poke in the gut, its not going to cut it to just kind of hold in the fetal position and cry over your also-probably-bleeding-out-girlfriend. Even if the bleeding doesnt LOOK bad, there could be internal bleeding. Theyre probably is actually considering you've likely punctured your lower intestines. Never, EVER get into a knife fight. Winner dies in ambulance, loser dies in the street. The best defense from a knife is great cardio. The second best is a gun. Preferably a friend who also has a gun. Homie dont play with knives.
And yeah, some fuckin gauze over a cleanly amputated arm? Pfft. Your heart is going to keep pumping and your blood is under pressure. Hope you arent squeemish because its going to be messy. Tie that shit off quick. In the real world that could be shearing force (cars), crushing force (rubble) or something like a snapped cable whipping around. Or your psycho ex with a machete. Date carefully.
Another common one is being thrown through glass. Don't google what Ruby did to generic thug number 1 in the first episode. Shit would have been NASTY. Glass bad.
So many dislocated joints. These weapons would be so heavy that they would physically hurt you if you tried to swing them. Yang's rocket jumps would destroy her shoulders. If not immediately, then over a life time. And her poor knees from all those landings. And you know, theyre a bitch to carry. Ask anyone whos been stuck on the 240B.
Going down in that dust mine to clear that giest? With an explosive atmosphere? Not only no, but FUCK no. All that dust is apparently unstable enough that dropping it causes it to go boom. What about dust....dust? Yeah, fire off a weapon and ignite the air. Good idea. Oh and no respirators? If concrete dust can kill you I dont even want to think about what magic concrete dust does. At least the gravity dust would theoretically float out of your alveoli.
Fuck em, feed him fish sticks. Drop a controlled charge in that motherfucker and build your launching platform from whats left over. I dont know what mining naturally exploding material would look like, but we would probably use cadets. Ironwood would be relieved of command for a mission that poorly thought out. But its anime, who cares? Now for the part. Dead people!
We dont have that many fatalities on screen to cover.
Phyrra's death, while dramatic actually wasn't too far off. She slumped over dead within three seconds. Thats about right i reckon. You can survive getting shot in the heart with an arrow depending, but you better have a crack team of surgeons ready to roll within minutes. Even then, brain damage is going to be most optimistic outcome. You're probably fucked. Now, if you catch a bullet right to the heart, youre done. There likely wont be much hubbub like she did, you'll likely just go limp and kinda fall over.
Roman got eaten by a bird. I dunno, sounds terrible.
Sienna's death was pretty accurate too. See, the problem with getting impaled isn't always the impaling part. Sometimes its the "Ima just take this out" part. No! Leave that shit in! What was depicted happening more or less could have been a massive drop in blood pressure causing immediate unconsciousness and then eventually death. Theoretically she could have woken and up and swung a few more times. Never know. Depends on where she got the shank. You absolutely can survive impalement.
Adam, same thing. Looks like left lung aaaand right under the heart. There wouldnt be an "oh", more like coughing and spitting blood. Totally survivable though. Its possible he actually died of drowning depending on how bad the bleeding was.
Leo got hacked apart off screen. Meh. Messy. Fennec blew up. Messier. Dude got smacked off a train. Although his partner should have totally lost his arm, the shear force on that would make it look like paper.
Clover is really the only super theatrical one. That much area being rammed to the side, probably splitting the heart in two and bifurcating the lungs? Nope. Rag dolled. No dramatic death. No last words. Likely a spurt of blood through the mouth and lights out. May have even split the spinal column.
Ramble ramble ramble. I like making stupid long posts. Helps me think.
Edit: If you enjoyed my ted talk, heres the other two posts about the things the cause injuries. You know, guns.
, 1 and 2.

2020.09.25 20:42 BriefCommission lost / maybe a rant ish

I was burned as a child quite badly and now I'm losing the ability to feel my right leg properly, I just feel like nothing makes sense like one min my leg is fine the next it's gone. Though tbh I'm just relived my spasms seem to have been a one off. Really hoping they don't come back otherwise I think amputation may have to be coincided. I have my first phone call with the neurologist next week, I'm feeling really nervous but I need answers urgently. My partner left me because "it was too much for them" but it's okay I guess I have too much on my plate to process my grief. I need to remain focused on my goals. My biggest issue seems to be going to the toilet I have't had any unwanted surprises but instead it feels like I always need to go but hardly anything comes out it's driving me crazy. so between every emotion in the book I guess I'm just not sure how to feel right now. Especially as it might have something to do with my past

2020.09.24 19:44 boombox2965 AITA - for calling out my partners mother for undermining our parenting decisions?

So i apologise for formatting I'm on mobile and would like an independent awnser to this. There are 6 people involved with this situation.
My partner (k for reference) has a daughter (L for reference) that is not biologically mine I love her as my own and we have a baby on the way. L's father rarely sees L once or twice a month for a few hours at most, my partners mother (A) has always disliked K's previous partners and made that well known this is relevant later.
L has had some problems in the past with her behaviour its something we are working on, we belive in being firm but fair so if L does something naughty she gets asked not to do it again, then a warning then sent to the corner for 4 minutes. I'm really proud that L is improving and her teachers have even commented on it after we sat down together at her latest parents evening.
This is where A comes in, A has always said I'm too strict with L and I send her to the corner to often, it came to a head a few days ago when L kicked K in a tantrum, K sent L to the corner and L started screaming, i then said L im going to count to 3 and if you're not in the corner by then you will have your dolly's taken off of you for the rest of the day. A then piped in "L come here dont you cry its ok dont worry" this is not the first time this has happened and I said to A i would really appreciate it if you would stop undermining me and K when L has been naughty.
A replied that I am a terrible match for her daughter and I bully her grand daughter, I am a waste of space and will be a terrible father. At this point I asked why she thinks that as only yesterday she said I was the best thing to happen to K getting her out of debt, fixing the house and supporting them with K's father is current in the hospital for an amputation. A left and has had nothing to do with us apart from message K saying what a bad person I am.
Am i the asshole for calling her out?

2020.09.24 18:44 xenizondich23 Spoiler Free Review The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis - 2020 Debut Novel

I normally don't share my reviews here, however this is a 2020 published and debut novel from Linden A Lewis and I feel it needs more sharing!
Goodreads link: The First Sister (The First Sister Trilogy #1) by Linden A. Lewis
Bingo Squares: Novel Published in 2020 (HM), Optimistic (HM), Chapter Epigraphs (HM), Feminist, Politics (HM), (Potentially: Climate Fiction as Earth is not longer habitable due to destroyed climate; Canadian - I have no idea)
TL;DR: A space-based futuristic take with very wonderful characters you'll love to see overcome their own problems and try to make the world better at the same time.
I finished the last third of the book in one sitting, my mind a whirlwind being blown over and over again thanks to all the reveals the text gives us. I'd say this book does a great job of revealing the characters, the story, the world bit by bit as we go on. Phenomenal writing, that.
There are 3 main characters the story is told from: First Sister, the mute head of the religion on the spaceship Juno; Lito val Lucius, a physically damaged elite Icarii soldier separated from his long-term partner Hiro. Interestingly, it is Hiro who is not seen on page as the story is being told from First Sister and Lito's first person's perspectives, but Hiro's chapters are voice recordings from the past.
First Sister is beautiful, mute, threatened constantly by her surroundings: she was forced to be a part of the Sisterhood (a glorified religion serving sex slaves up to the Gean soldiers). A lot of her story revolves around her finding ways to secure her safety, and that being taken away or diminished in some way. First Sister is a bisexual woman who finds herself falling in love with Juno's new captain Saito Ren, whom she is also told to spy on for her Sisterhood.
Lito is scarred inside and outside. Together with his partner Hiro, they barely survived The Fall of Ceres a year prior. The trauma from both that battle on Ceres and also being separated from Hiro (they were previously connected via neural implants) makes him a very compelling character to follow: he is not willing to give up or give in to his pain. Granted, part of that is using his neural implant as a crutch to wipe away his emotions.
Hiro, a genderqueer character, is someone we mostly see through Lito's eyes: the young child at the Academy, later on we hear of their abusive childhood through their recordings. It's not until they appear on the page that we see how much they have also been affected by The Fall of Ceres; and it's pretty different to all the other characters.
The Fall of Ceres effected everyone in this story. I was surprised how much, since at first it seems like such a personal battle that Hiro, Lito, and Saito Ren went through. And that speaks to the phenomenal world building. At first I had very strong Expanse vibes: there are two main forces opposed to one another (the Geans controlling Mars and Earth on one side and the Icarii living on and mining Mercury and Venus). But then the Asters are introduced, and we hear of smugglers operating outside these two groups. Plus there are the AI that heavily trounced humans in a previous war and cut off their outward expansion past the inner galaxy planets. I am looking forward to seeing a lot more of this whole interplay in future books.
A main point of contention between the aforementioned sides is how the Icarii have a monopoly on technology and especially gene editing: they have the neural implants that allow for elite fighters and also to control your emotions; they all have perfect youthful bodies (often with very colorful eyes and hair) from constant modifications; they create amazing medicines; they have highly advanced space ships and weapons. The Geans (as part of their religion) eschew body modifications (including the use of prosthetics) due to this... and yet as the story progresses it's revealed how often they actually do have the same tech: they scavenge a lot of Icarii tech after battles, and super spoiler: they also have neural implants being used. There's a strong sense of moral superiority within the Gean people.
I really loved this story. There is an immense amount of world building, and yet it never felt heavy handed as most of it was revealed as the plot moved forward. The story had great pacing; most of the story progresses as 1 chapter from First Sister's perspective, then 1 from Lito's and then a recording from Hiro. It slightly annoyed me, since I wanted to stick with one perspective for longer than we were given. However as their timelines converge towards the end of the story it makes sense for them to be written like this. Plus, it gives us a balance of not thinking 'x side is super evil and I hope y will kill them all!' It's remarkably easy to feel for all sides of this conflict.
This book not only had great queer characters, but also had one of the better mental illness / trauma representations I've read. There are a few scenes were characters are literally losing their minds from the trauma they experienced and it's very realistic. Plus almost every character has some sort of mental or physical trauma which is so realistic for this fraught world.
I have a lot more I could write about this book, but I don't want to dive too much into spoilers. So I'll just say, if you like great character driven stories, with some different world building, non-human like people, visiting a bunch of different planets, seeing some neat cultures, and enjoyed The Expanse, you'll probably love this book.
CW / TW: there are no graphic sexual abuse scenes, however it does explore the dangers of rape culture and sexual assault. Includes violence, death and graphic injury, amputation, PTSD and trauma, denial of bodily autonomy in various ways (prostitution, plastic surgery, neural implants, experimentation, gender expression), blackmail, execution, untreated mental illness, dysphoria, implied torture, and emotional child abuse.

2020.09.21 11:37 throwaway77771478 I (F/25) cut off my dad (58) entirely while he's in poor health

Throwaway because my main profile is too obvious.
I'm not sure what the purpose of posting this here is, I guess I'm just a wreck and need some advice on how to move forward and find acceptance/peace for my life.
My dad has a suspected personality disorder, probably BPD since he was beaten as a kid off my alcoholic grandfather, and that's what I have now too after suffering the same cycle, he was a big guy, I mean like 6ft1, and I was quite a scrawny girl growing up. At first when I was really young, I remember him being really strict, I wasn't allowed to do what other kids did and I got into trouble for a smallest things, and the punishment was physical, almost all the time. My dad would make me get a wooden spoon from the kitchen myself and bring it in to him before he would whack me red with it. As I got older and a little bigger he resorted to using his fists, by 12 he was punching me like a grown man, he even knocked me out a couple of times. He would also berate me and belittle me, picking fights whenever he felt like shit about himself. Just a bully really. At 19 I left through a domestic violence program and subjected myself to extreme poverty for about a year just to get away. My extended family and the rest of my immediate knew about this abuse and allowed it to continue, when I was 21 I couldn't take not seeing or hearing from my sisters or mum anymore, I consequently has to "apologise" to my abuser for leaving and basically outing him as that online when I was looking for places to stay with friends or colleagues. It was a horrendous, demeaning situation I wouldn't wish on anyone, just so I could see my family. My dad is now very ill having had 3 strokes, a triple bypass and now he's had to have both legs amputated, we all thought he was going to die and wouldn't come out of theater and I tried my best to play the role of "dutiful daughter" until his passing, but he survived the surgery, he's now back home being a burden on my weak-minded but loving mother. I can see him shaving years off her because he is so entitled and demanding, he often swears at her. I'm just growing with resentment and anger as I get older and think about having kids of my own with my partner, I could never hurt a child. Realising this I basically snapped and told my mum that I was done with him, I didn't care how sick he was the same way nobody cared when I was psychologically tortured and hurt by him all those years ago. I didn't even come back to see him just them, and they say they understand but at the same time repeatedly use language that implies I'm crazy and my mental health makes me cut people off.
If anyone has any advice on trying to learn that it's not my fault and I'm not a horrible person that would be great, my body has broken out in eczema from stress and I can't sleep because I feel guilty about cutting off my abuser because he is unwell.
Tl,dr; I cut off my abusive dad when his health is at it's worst, my family is treating me as if I'm wrong for doing this but in a passive, condescending way that blames my mental health (that he caused)

2020.09.18 13:00 DarthEquus The History of Medicalized Circumcision Part 5: 1980-2019

The History of Medicalized Circumcision Part 5: 1980-2019
A new wave of genital cutting was begun with Wiswell in the '80s based on neonatal UTI incidence. He reached his conclusions by comparing children born in a hospital with universal infant circumcision who were born prematurely and whose poor health had prevented routine circumcision at birth. Notably he also commanded parents to treat the child's foreskin destructively only to use the resultant damage as evidence circumcision was necessary. The bigger question about this unfortunately successful infant genital surgery promotion is how was it ever accepted as valid science? To (1998) found the rate of UTI in Canadian infants was reduced 3.5 times but that was really from only 0.7% to 0.2%. So while it sounds like a lot as a relative rate, it would take almost 200 surgeries to prevent a single UTI.
The much more powerful and significant wave of circumcision activism beginning in the 1980s was the terribly successful lie that male genital cutting could significantly help prevent HIV infection. This idea did not reach significant development until after 2000 when John Hopkins circumcision activists designed and performed the large and expensive African RCTs to "prove" male circumcision prevented HIV infection in men based on studies comparing groups with differing levels of STI awareness counseling, the most likely real cause of the recorded effect. That flaw would be fatal, but there were many other problems with those studies besides that. See Boyle & Hill 2011, Van Howe and Storms (2011), and Green (2008) for critiques of those studies.

1980: ~80% of the newborn American male population is circumcised and 67% of adult men

https://preview.redd.it/m52eo19mlim51.jpg?width=840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=739f5049e289c17c427740de92e278457d754c54
1980 Edward Wallerstein published Circumcision: An American Health Fallacy detailing the sordid history of the medicalized genital cutting movement in the volume that launched the modern intactivist movement.
1982 Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D. wrote in the Saturday Evening Post: "All of the Western world raises its children uncircumcised and it seems logical that, with the extent of health knowledge in those countries, such a practice must be safe."
1983 Hugh C. Thompson recognized there did not appear to be any good reason to continue circumcision. [The Value of Neonatal Circumcision: An Unanswered and Perhaps Unanswerable Question. Am J Dis Child. — [full text]]
"Neonatologists have regarded the operation [circumcision] as without merit. Physicians in all fields agree on the necessity for careful explanation to the parents, preferably before the infant is born. They deplore the occasional grave complications that are largely produced by poor technique and inexperienced operators. One major reason formerly used to justify neonatal circumcision—correction or prevention of phimosis—has been shown to be untenable by serial studies from birth to adulthood. The major indications now proposed as justifying the procedure are prevention of penile [skin] cancer [which is rarer than male breast cancer] and balanitis and a reduction in herpes genitalis and, possibly, cancer of the uterine cervix [disproved and more recently shown to be caused by HPV]. These diseases are decades removed from the neonatal period, and opponents of circumcision regard them as lacking incontrovertible proof or as inconsequential."
1983 Money & Davison found that four of the five men circumcised as adults in their study rated penile sensitivity as diminished. They didn't describe the difference very articulately but they noted differences included "diminished penile sensitivity, less penile gratification, more penile pain, and cosmetic deformity".
"Removal of the entire foreskin, or even part of it, may require a change in masturbatory technique, insofar as there is less or no redundant [sic] skin to be stretched forward or backward [the eversion of the foreskin is more like rolling but with more fluidity]. Thus, there needs to be more reliance on some other surface, for example, the lubricated skin of the fingers or palm, to provide ether rotary or longitudinal friction directly to the shaft of the penis. What has been lost in circumcision is the stretch effect and hypothetically, receptors that provide proprioceptive stretch sensation from the foreskin. Inside the vagina, the penis must move in and out in the fashion of a finger, rather than being sometimes able, like the head of a turtle to pull in and out of the carapuce of its own foreskin, while the pubococcygeal muscles at the vaginal entrance grip the lower part of the shaft. Stretch sensations may be additionally altered if the frenulum is severed in the circumcision."
[Adult penile circumcision: erotosexual and cosmetic sequelae. J Sex Res.]
1985 Thomas E. Wiswell, a military doctor, used flawed methods to show that circumcision decreased incidence of urinary tract infections by comparing infants born prematurely to infants born at term. [Decreased incidence of urinary tract infections in circumcised male infants. Pediatrics.]
1985 Benjamin Spock finally updated the his best-selling parenting book (first published in 1946): "I strongly recommend leaving the foreskin alone. Parents should insist on convincing reasons for circumcision—and there are no convincing reasons that I know of." Later in a 1989 interview in Redbook, he stated "My own preference, if I had the good fortune to have another son, would be to leave his little penis alone."
1986 Aaron J. Fink claimed that circumcision prevented AIDS. [A possible explanation for heterosexual male infection with AIDS. NEJM.]
1988 Aaron J. Fink invented the idea that circumcision prevented neonatal group B streptococcal disease. [Is hygiene enough? Circumcision as a possible strategy to prevent group B streptococcal disease. AJOG.]
1989 Edgar J. Schoen leads the AAP Task Force on Circumcision declared circumcision is medically beneficial. Reported health benefits are hygiene, penile and cervical cancer, phimosis, STDs, and UTIs.
"In addition to the medical aspects, other factors will affect the parents' decisions, including esthetics, religion, cultural attitudes, social pressures, and tradition."
[Report of the Task Force on Circumcision. Pediatrics]
This report has been extensively criticized for it's failure to provide sound evidence of preventative effects of circumcision, it's lack of a cost-benefit analysis, it's failure to address the functions of the foreskin, and overall bias of the report.
[Matthew R. Giannetti. Circumcision and the American Academy of Pediatrics: Should Scientific Misconduct Result in Trade Association Liability? 85 Iowa L. Rev 1507 (2000).]

1990: ~68% of the newborn American male population is circumcised and 70% of adult men

1991 Edgar J. Schoen implored European doctors to institute mass circumcision. [Is it time for Europe to reconsider newborn circumcision? Acta Ped Scan.]
1991 Aaron J. Fink declares mass circumcision is necessary to prevent sand from getting into the soldiers' foreskins. [Circumcision and sand. JRSM.]
1994 Legal victory: Miltex, one of several Mogen clamp manufacturers, stopped distributing the devices in 1994. "Although no obvious defect has been found with the clamp's design or manufacturing we have concerns over the possible mishandling of the instrument by practitioners and our inability to ensure the instrument's proper use," Miltex's then-president Saul Kleinkramer wrote in a letter announcing the decision. The manufacturer was then in default on millions of dollars in lost lawsuits before millions more were lost in additional lawsuits, in total over $23 million. ["Injuries linked to circumcision clamps" Hennessy-Fiske. LA Times. 2011.]
1996 J. R. Taylor et al. found the average amount of foreskin amputated was 51% of the total penile skin on average. They identified the "ridged band contains more Meissner's corpuscles than does the smooth mucosa and exhibits features of specialized sensory mucosa."
"The 'ridged band' may be key to the persistent mislabelling of the inner lining of the prepuce as 'skin'; it is clearly visible on inspection of the retracted prepuce, it is continuous with the wrinkled true skin of the tip of the prepuce, and it looks like skin. Histology aside, the 'wrinkles' of the ridged band are regularly transverse and are difficult to efface by gentle stretching. A vascular blush is usually present.
The vascular ridges of the 'ridged band' and its Meissner's corpuscles firmly separate preputial epithelium from true skin and place preputial mucosa amongst other mucocutaneous mucosae. Winkelmann emphasized the structural and functional importance of junctional regions of the body and focused on mucocutaneous end-organs, or 'genital corpuscles', of the glans penis and prepuce. Some of these end-organs resemble Krause end-bulbs; others resemble Meissner's corpuscles.
Meissner's corpuscles of the prepuce may be compared with similar nerve-endings in the finger-tips and lips, which respond in a fraction of a second to contact with light objects that bring about deformation of their capsules. However, complex sensation, at least in the glans penis, may be mediated by free nerve-endings rather than by specialized end-organs."
[The prepuce: Specialized mucosa of the penis and its loss to circumcision. BJU.]
1996 Political victory against female genital cutting: Non-therapeutic female cutting in all forms were made illegal in the US. [United States Code, 2010 Ed., Title 18, Chapter 7 (Assault), §116 - Female genital mutilation]
1997 Edgar J. Schoen again suggested European countries should institute non-therapeutic circumcision. [Benefits of newborn circumcision: Is Europe ignoring the medical evidence? Arch Dis Child.]
1997 Lander et al. found that circumcision without anesthesia was extremely traumatic for babies. Before this, almost all neonatal cutting were done without anesthetic due to increased risks involved with using it and the prevalent false belief babies were not capable of feeling significant pain or can't remember it. [Comparison of ring block, dorsal penile nerve block, and topical anesthesia for neonatal circumcision. JAMA.]
1997 Taddio et al. wrote on the effect of the pain of infant circumcision being measurable later:
"Preliminary studies suggested that pain experienced by infants in the neonatal period may have long-lasting effects on future infant behaviour. The objectives of this study were to find out whether neonatal circumcision altered pain response at 4-month or 6-month vaccination compared with the response in uncircumcised infants...
"Multivariate ANOVA revealed a significant group effect (p < 0.001) in difference (vaccination minus baseline) values for percentage facial action, percentage cry time, and visual analogue scale pain scores. Univariate ANOVAs were significant for all outcome measures (p < 0.05): infants circumcised with placebo had higher difference scores than uncircumcised infants for percentage facial action (136.9 vs 77.5%), percentage cry duration (53.8 vs 24.7%), and visual analogue scale pain scores (5.1 vs 3.1 cm). There was a significant linear trend on all outcome measures, showing increasing pain scores from uncircumcised infants, to those circumcised with Emla [topical anesthetic], to those circumcised with placebo.
Circumcised infants showed a stronger pain response to subsequent routine vaccination than uncircumcised infants. Among the circumcised group, preoperative treatment with Emla attenuated the pain response to vaccination. We recommend [anesthetic] treatment to prevent neonatal circumcision pain."
[Effect of neonatal circumcision on pain response during subsequent routine vaccination. Lancet .]
1997 The AAP deems infant male circumcision to be an elective procedure rather than routine.
1998 Immerman and Mackey proposed that male genital cutting reorganizes the brain to restrain sexuality and positively influence both social and pair bonding. They noted: "It appears that any sensory deprivation of a system can also lead to cortical changes."
"They assumed desensitizing the penis should reduce sexuality, but that ignores the fact that genital cutting permanently externalizes the orgasmic interior parts of the penis. This sensorial change could as easily be thought to promote sexual thoughts. Supporting the later idea, there are exceptions, but generally homophobia is considerably more common in circumcising cultures or those derived from or strongly influenced by circumcising cultures. This could be because men with circumcised penises have more difficulty perceiving homosexuality as something other than sex."
1999 Cold & Taylor studied the foreskin's specialized innervation and concluded that it is "primary erogenous tissue necessary for normal sexual function." It is specialized, protective, erogenous tissue. A description of the complex nerve structure of the penis explains why anesthetics provide incomplete pain relief during circumcision. [The prepuce. BJU. pdf]
1999 The AAP Task Force on Circumcision reviewed 40 years worth of medical studies and concluded the "potential medical benefits of newborn male circumcision… are not sufficient to recommend routine neonatal circumcision." This report was the first time the AAP acknowledged that circumcision without anesthesia is traumatic and that if circumcision is to be done, anesthesia should be used. Some highlights from the report:
Role of Hygiene: "there is little evidence to affirm the association between circumcision status and optimum penile hygiene."
STDs including HIV: "behavioral factors appear to be far more important than circumcision status."
Penile Cancer: "in a developed country such as the United States, penile cancer is a rare disease and the risk of penile cancer developing in an uncircumcised man, although increased compared with a circumcised man, is low."
Urinary Tract Infections: "breastfeeding was shown to have a threefold protective effect on the incidence of UTI in a sample of uncircumcised infants. However, breastfeeding status has not been evaluated systematically in studies assessing UTI and circumcision status." meaning that the earlier UTIs studies results were confounded. Even if their numbers were accurate, in order to prevent one UTI during the first year of life by circumcising a baby boy, approximately 195 babies who will not get a UTI would need to be circumcised. Curiously, while female infants develop UTIs at higher rates than boys, the standard treatment is antibiotics not surgery. The AAP concludes this section noting that "the absolute risk of developing a UTI in an uncircumcised male infant is low (at most, ~1%)".
[AAP Task Force on Circumcision. Circumcision Policy Statement, Pediatrics 1999;103(3):686-93.]

2000: ~62% of the newborn American male population is circumcised and 75% of adult men

2003 Edgar J. Schoen pressured the AAP to reverse its policy on circumcision, claiming it prevents AIDS. [It's wise to circumcise: time to change policy. Pediatrics.]
2005-2007 Johns Hopkins three studies were all ended early with the conclusion that circumcision is "like a vaccine" that prevents HIV infection. These three African studies were widely reported falsely to be gold-standard evidence of major HIV benefit from circumcision. The results of the African RCTs could easily be explained by the varying levels of STI awareness counseling between the two groups because the counseling was provided along with the surgery. Selection bias in groups of men who wanted the surgery when half were denied what they wanted, while half were given the surgery they wanted and instructed about sexual disease and safe sex. In all the studies, five times more participants were lost than seroconverted. [Auvert, 2005; Bailey & Moses, 2005; Gray, 2007]
2000 The U.S. FDA "issued a public health notice about the Mogen and Gomco clamps after receiving about 20 injury reports a year since 1996, including lacerations, hemorrhaging, penile amputation and urethral damage. Instead of recalling the devices, the FDA advised users to make sure they were using the correct size Mogen clamp and that the space between the clamp's jaws met manufacturer's specifications. The agency also cautioned against using replacement parts on the Gomco clamp, which led it to malfunction.
But complications continued. In the 11 years between the FDA warnings and the Hall settlement, the agency has received 139 additional reports of problems related to circumcision clamps, including 51 injuries, said spokeswoman Amanda Sena. Twenty-one of those reports were related to Mogen clamps, all but one of which involved injuries. ["Injuries linked to circumcision clamps" Hennessy-Fiske. LA Times. 2011.]
2000 Circumcision is described as an intervention with long-term neurobehavioral effects:
"The brain of the newborn infant is particularly vulnerable to early adverse experiences, leading to abnormal development and behavior. Although several investigations have correlated newborn complications with abnormal adult behavior, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains rudimentary. Models of early experience, such as repetitive pain, sepsis, or maternal separation in rodents and other species have noted multiple alterations in the adult brain, correlated with specific behavioral types depending on the timing and nature of the adverse experience. The mechanisms mediating such changes in the newborn brain have remained largely unexplored. Maternal separation, sensory isolation (understimulation), and exposure to extreme or repetitive pain (overstimulation) may cause altered brain development. These changes promote two distinct behavioral types characterized by increased anxiety, altered pain sensitivity, stress disorders, hyperactivity/attention deficit disorder, leading to impaired social skills and patterns of self-destructive behavior. The clinical importance of these mechanisms lies in the prevention of early adverse experiences and effective treatment of newborn pain and stress."
[Anand, K. and Scalzo, F. Can Adverse Neonatal Experiences Alter Brain Development and Subsequent Behavior? Biol Neonate]
2001 Kenneth McGrath detailed the anatomy of the frenular delta. [The frenular delta: a new preputial structure In: Denniston GC, Hodges FM, Milos MF, editors. Understanding Circumcision: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to a Multi-Dimensional Problem]
2002 D. Taves tested the hypothesis the foreskin reduces friction finding it did so more than 10 times (when friction is great enough to engage this feature). [The intromission function of the foreskin. Med Hypotheses.]
2003 Bensley & Boyle found circumcision contributes to vaginal dryness. Women reported they were significantly more likely to have experienced vaginal dryness during intercourse with circumcised than with genitally intact men. [Effects of Male Circumcision on Female Arousal and Orgasm. N Z Med J.]
2007 M. Sorrells tested the fine touch sensitivity of the penis and found the foreskin is the most sensitive part of the penis, while the glans is the least. [Fine touch pressure thresholds in the adult penis. BJU Int.NSFW diagram comparing circumcised and intact sensitivity (penis graphic)]
"The most sensitive location on the circumcised penis was the circumcision scar on the ventral surface. Five locations on the uncircumcised penis that are routinely removed at circumcision had lower pressure thresholds [i.e., were more sensitive] than the ventral scar of the circumcised penis."
YouTube: Morris Sorrels discusses his test and it's results
2007 The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommended against performing female circumcision or other non-therapeutic female genital cutting surgeries, because the promotion of the surgery as sexually enhancing was not based on empirical evidence and the surgeries were not medically indicated. This was the first assertion of what had become common wisdom over only the past 30 years. Female cutting for benefits was being promoted in popular US media into the 1970s.

2010: ~58% of the newborn American male population is circumcised and 73% of adult men

2010 The American Academy of Pediatrics published a statement on Female Genital Cutting policy proposing a "ritual nick" to be performed by medical professionals. Outrage ensued. The statement was retracted one month later.
[Ritual Genital Cutting of Female Minors. AAP Committee in Bioethics]
2010 Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) stated the foreskin is "a complex, erotogenic structure that plays an important role in the mechanical function of the penis during sexual acts, such as penetrative intercourse and masturbation". The organization also stated "circumcision of male minors is a violation of children’s rights to autonomy and physical integrity."
2011 Morten Frisch et al. examined associations of male circumcision with a range of measures of sexual dysfunction in both sexes.
The relevant graph from Circumstitions.com
"Age at first intercourse, perceived importance of a good sex life and current sexual activity differed little between circumcised and uncircumcised men or between women with circumcised and uncircumcised spouses. However, circumcised men reported more partners and were more likely to report frequent orgasm difficulties after adjustment for potential confounding factors [11 vs 4%, OR(adj) = 3.26; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.42-7.47], and women with circumcised spouses more often reported incomplete sexual needs fulfilment (38 vs 28%, OR(adj) = 2.09; 95% CI 1.05-4.16) and frequent sexual function difficulties overall (31 vs 22%, OR(adj) = 3.26; 95% CI 1.15-9.27), notably orgasm difficulties (19 vs 14%, OR(adj) = 2.66; 95% CI 1.07-6.66) and dyspareunia [painful intercourse] (12 vs 3%, OR(adj) = 8.45; 95% CI 3.01-23.74). Findings were stable in several robustness analyses, including one restricted to non-Jews and non-Moslems.
Our study shows hitherto unrecognized associations between male circumcision and sexual difficulties in both men and women. While confirmatory findings in other settings are warranted, notably from areas where neonatal circumcision is more common, our findings may inform doctors and parents of baby boys for whom the decision of whether or not to circumcise is not dictated by religious or cultural traditions. Additionally, since it appears from our study that both men and women may have fewer sexual problems when the man is uncircumcised, and because preputial plasties may sometimes serve as suitable alternatives to standard circumcision, our study may stimulate a more conservative, tissue-preserving attitude in situations where foreskin pathology requires surgical intervention."
[Male circumcision and sexual function in men and women: a survey-based, cross-sectional study in Denmark. Int J Epidemiol.]
YouTube: Medical researcher Morten Frisch speaks about research finding an increased rate of sexual difficulties correlating with circumcision
2012 S. Podnar found the ability to elicit the penilo-cavernosus reflex was suppressed by foreskin destruction. This reflex was non-elicitable in 8% of healthy intact men and 73% of the men with circumcised foreskin. [Clinical elicitation of the penilo-cavernosus reflex in circumcised men. BJU Int.]
2012 In a short-lived political victory followed by a loss, a Cologne District Court ruled that a boy's non-therapeutic circumcision constituted "bodily harm". In response to this legal precedent and resultant pressure from religious groups on politicians, the German legislature legalized non-therapeutic infant foreskin destruction less than a year later against the opinion of German Pediatricians and the majority of the nation.
2013 G. A. Bronselaer et al. surveyed over 1,000 intact and over 300 circumcised men in Belgium. They found:
"For the glans penis, circumcised men reported decreased sexual pleasure and lower orgasm intensity. They also stated more effort was required to achieve orgasm, and a higher percentage of them experienced unusual sensations (burning, prickling, itching, or tingling and numbness of the glans penis). For the penile shaft a higher percentage of circumcised men described discomfort and pain, numbness and unusual sensations. In comparison to men circumcised before puberty, men circumcised during adolescence or later indicated less sexual pleasure at the glans penis, and a higher percentage of them reported discomfort or pain and unusual sensations at the penile shaft.
This study confirms the importance of the foreskin for penile sensitivity, overall sexual satisfaction, and penile functioning. Furthermore, this study shows that a higher percentage of circumcised men experience discomfort or pain and unusual sensations as compared with the uncircumcised population. Before circumcision without medical indication, adult men, and parents considering circumcision of their sons, should be informed of the importance of the foreskin in male sexuality."
[Male circumcision decreases penile sensitivity as measured in a large cohort. BJU Int.]
2016 Jennofer Bossio publishes a study claiming no difference in penile sensitivity between circumcised and intact men. Though the intact men reported higher sensitivity for touch and vibration, she made her final conclusion based on the two groups response to pain, which showed jo statistical difference. [Examining Penile Sensitivity in Neonatally Circumcised and Intact Men Using Quantitative Sensory Testing. J Urol. 2016 Jun.]
The media, of course, ran with the conclusion, despite the methodological flaws in the study. Brian Earp discusses the study and it's limited impact on our understanding of long term effects of infant male circumcision.
[Infant Circumcision and Adult Penile Sensitivity.]
2017 The 2012 AAP statement on circumcision expired and since then, they have not released any policy statements on the procedure.
2018 In Iceland, the Progressive Party made a motion to ban all non therapeutic genital cutting of boys. The bill received massive pushback from religious communities. It has not been passed, but neither has it been scrapped.
[183/148 frumvarp: almenn hegningarlög]

Looking forward

This timeline is meant to help show the series of events that led us from a circumcision rate of almost zero, to a country of normalized, routine circumcision, and finally to a country desperately trying to justify the practice. Despite the most stubborn traditionalists, the practice is dying out. We can acknowledge the history of medical circumcision and recognize it is nothing but sexual violence and snake oil claims and bring this practice to a swift end, and ensure that out future children will live their lives with their whole bodies. Or we can cling to comforting lies, and allow the insecure and ignorant damage their children for life to protect their own egos. Future generations will look back at us now and have the same reactions of disgust and disbelief many readers here had when looking at the justifications given 100 or more years ago.
Our future children deserve better.

2020.09.14 11:02 Razor_One Frostpunk: Factions and Empires

This is a little something I wrote up after On the Edge released. I've sat on it for a bit trying to stamp out typos and rejigger some of the more boring bits. It's basically a set of ideas regarding the major factions and empires without any thought to balance in mind and ranges from Britain to Japan and how they might have prepared for the Great Frost, with each empire having it's own unique bonus and three factions with their own sets of bonuses and maluses, accompanied by a blurb explaining the faction.
Think of it as a dream expansion, with the various empires and factions changing certain gameplay mechanics both large and small. Apologies in advance for butchering the wording on factions I named via google translate.
--

Factions of the British Empire

Empire Bonus: British Standardisation: Standard Gameplay.
Faction 1: Imperial Exploration Company
The Imperial Exploration not only built the generators, but also researched advanced second generation designs at their forward operating bases in the Frostland. Their experience in Arctic exploration prior to the great frost was an asset.

Faction 2: British Evacuation Service
The British Evacuation Service had nothing less than the heroic task of the safe and orderly evacuation of the British Isles to the generator sites in the Frostland. Between the chaos of dying empires, revolution, and the harshness of the great Frost itself, they managed to evacuate only a handful of their charges to their chosen generator sites before collapsing into ad-hoc attempts to save as many lives as they could, before finally freezing to death at their posts.
Faction 3: Victorian Preservation Institute.
If the British Evacuation Service has the heroic task of saving lives, the Victorian Preservation Institute had the task of ensuring the preservation of flora and fauna that would allow for a rapid recovery in a world after the Great Frost. Underfunded and undermanned, the Royal Society petitioned Lord Craven on their behalf for special dispensation to dispatch automatons to allow for the success of the great project.

The Republic of France

Empire Bonus: Fraternite: All Structures able to host 50% additional workers at decreased efficiency.
Faction 1: La societe mecaniste de la Republique (The Mechanist Society of the Republic)
The emergence of the Mechanist Society as a major political force was an inevitability after the 'Little Frost' of 1871. The following mass of amputations and subsequent augmentations created an economic disparity in which the augmented tended to become, ironically, more prosperous. Advocates of pre-emptive augmentation gained in popularity as the Great Frost became ever harsher on the people of the Republic. The Mechanist Society embraces technology wholeheartedly, though at what cost?

Faction 2: Le Comite de colonisation arctique de la Republique (The Arctic Colonisation Committee of the Republic)
The French counterpart to the British Evacuation Service, the Committee was faced with the problem of arriving late to the colonisation of the Frostland owing to bureaucratic inefficiencies. With the best generator sites already scouted and occupied, the Committee made do with sub-par locations in more southern climes. With most of the intellectuals and industrialists snapped up by their rivals the Committee also faced a shortage of expertise.

Faction 3: La division du developpement industriel colonial (The colonial industrial development division)
Rivals to the Mechanists, the Industrial Development Division was an umbrella organisation that united famed industrialists, renowned French Futurists, engineers, chemists, physicists and numerous other disciplines for the goal of producing the gargantuan industrial networks required to construct Frances own generator projects in the Frostland. To this end, they employed enormous trains to ferry vital peoples and materials overland between sites, and often found themselves operating, sometimes in competition and sometimes in cooperation, with the British Imperial Exploration Company.

The United States of America

Empire Bonus: Optimism: Hope generation is more effective.
Faction 1: Tesla Manufacturing
Amongst the last of the American Endeavours to establish themselves in the Frostland, Tesla Manufacturing's meteoric rise was owed to its capacity to innovate on the manufacture of Steam Cores, improve existing industrial designs, and push at the boundaries of engineering and science. The company did however suffer from Tesla's eccentricities which only worsened as the Great Frost did, believed by his closest research assistants to be a sign of the great strain he was under in investigating the cause, and potential methods to reverse, the Great Frost.

Faction 2: The American Arctic Exploration and Advancement League
Amongst one of the first nations to successfully cross the Frostland, the American Arctic Exploration and Advancement League sought to emulate their adventurous forebears and pioneer the Frostland in anticipation of a wave of colonisation from both North America and their British partners. Recognising the crucial importance of technology in surviving the Frost, the League sought to ensure that the knowledge and progress of the prior century would not be consumed by the chaos and cold engulfing the world.

Faction 3: The United States Civil Engineering Corps
The Civil Engineering Corps was charged with the design, testing, and construction of buildings 'suitable for the American temperament in the hostile cold' of the Frostland. To that end, everything from experimental steam hub designs, redesigned heaters and improved housing were trialled in arctic conditions. Unfortunately the Great Frost struck before these designs could successfully be rolled out.

The German Empire

Empire Bonus: Access to Guard Posts regardless of Faith/Order choices. If Choosing Order, T3 Sentinel Posts unlocked.
Faction 1: Kaiserliche Deutsche Marine Nord Aufklarungsabteilung (Imperial German Navy Northern Reconnaissance Division)
The Navy Northern Reconnaissance Division was tasked by the German Empire to spy on British and American activities in the Frostland in the years after the 'Little Frost' by inserting spies into work teams headed north, intercepting transmissions, and scouting active generator building sites. Though the knowledge that a greater cooling trend would come came late to German efforts to resist the Great Frost, it would scarcely have come at all if not for the Navy Northern Reconnaissance Division.

Faction 2: Deutscher kaiserlicher Ressourcenexplorations-und Entwicklungsflugel (German Imperial Resource Exploration and Development Wing)
With the late arrival of Germany in the scramble for the Frostland, it was felt by the Kaiser that Germany had best catch up or be left permanently in the cold. To this end, German industry threw itself at the problems of the Great Frost with great fervor, often eschewing more elegant designs for simple, brutal and effective ones.

Faction 3: Kaiserlich Deutsches Forschungs- und Fortschrittsunternehmen (Imperial German Research and Progress Enterprise)
Often isolated by the political machinations of other empires, the intellectual apparatus of Germany immediately rose to the task of building the necessary tools to make the colonisation of Frostland generator sites a reality for the German Empire, inventing entirely new machinery for their needs or acquiring them through other means before subsequently improving them.

The Russian Empire

Empire Bonus: Access to Church regardless of Faith/Order choices. If Choosing Faith, Church upgrades into Cathedral.
Faction 1: Сибирские казаки (Siberian Cossacks)
The mass migrations that accompanied the worsening Great Frost demanded that sparsely inhabited territories to be settled rapidly and without delay. The Cossacks of Siberia were instrumental in finding appropriate generator sites and guiding huddled masses to warmth and security. Unfortunately, the sites of these generators were selected for stability and warmth, not for their wealth of resources, and as such populations would have to work outside their sheltered generator sites in order to acquire resources.

Faction 2: Личная гвардия царя Александра III (Tsar Alexander the third's personal guard)
Charged with providing appropriate quarters for the nobility and high society for the duration of the Great Frost, Tsar Alexander III's personal guard oversaw the development of a generator site for his personal use and residence.

Faction 3: 9-я Дальневосточная дивизия обороны (The 9th Far East Defense Division)
Denied access to the resource rich Frostlands and needing to make ruinous trade agreements to the other great powers for Generator technology, the Russian Empire took advantage of the chaos and fighting in the far east to expand Russian territory and seize needed resources. This state of war continued even after the Great Frost came.

The Empire of Japan

Empire Bonus: Gain Access to the Shrine building regardless of Faith/Order choices. T2 Shrine upgrade (神社 [Jinja]) when choosing Faith.
Faction 1: 開拓使 [Kaitakushi] (Hokkaido Development Commission)
Unwilling to allow an aggressive Russia an inroad to the Home Islands, the Empire of Japan mandated the development of Hokkaido. As the Great Frost worsened, the Hokkaido Development Commission was instructed to find ways to make living in colder climes more amenable to the Japanese peoples.

Faction 2: 帝国鹿児島高等専門学校 (Imperial Kagoshima Technical Institute of Higher Learning)
The Institute of Higher Learning was initially thrown into a panic at recognising the threat that the Great Frost offered to the Japanese Home Islands. As one of the last Empires to learn of the Great Frost, Japan's Generator project was nothing less than a titanic undertaking requiring a vast military effort to secure vital resources in Korea and Manchuria, diplomatic overtures to British, Dutch, French and German colonies left to fend for themselves, thwarting Russian aggression, and espionage aimed at securing vital intelligence necessary to combat the Frost.

Faction 3: 穂高岳気候観測所 (Mount Hotakadake Climate Observatory)
As the last of the great empires to come to the knowledge that the Great Frost was coming, a severe need for climate data presented itself to the Japanese government. The Mount Hotakadake Climate Observatory was built, not only to provide this sorely needed data, but to relay weather forecasts to the entirety of the Home Islands and their attendant generator sites
